I am almost ready to quilt the top I made for my Grammy but the backing is only a few inches bigger than the top on all sides, if I pin it well around the edges will that work or should I sew some more material to it? Thanks! (BTW, if someone would adopt me already I coulda saved some folks from reading this, hint hint Lol)

I try to give myself at least 2 to 4" all the way around. If I'm sending to the longarmer, I try for a little more to make it easier for her to put it on the frame.

If your not using or sending it to a longarmer & your quilt top is nice & squared, I don't think you need more than an inch or 2 extra for the backing. I pin the sandwich together with saefty pins & then turn over the backing extended edge to the front & pin until I finish machine quilting to the outer edges. This keeps the batting from getting beat up during all the twisting & turning during quilting.

At least 2" on each side.

KellyK, I'm glad you asked that question. That is very helpful to me, too.

If you're sending it out for quilting, you should allow at 6 inches.

I try to give myself at least 2 inches or more. I just got through spray basting a quilt. I found minky at the thrift store for a couple dollars that is a perfect match. It just sticks out past the quilt top barely a half inch. I sprayed it extra and will also pin it before I quilt it. Talk about cutting in close. LOL!!

I'm am with everyone else, 2" should be plenty. I don't like a lot of extra fabric. I hand quilt. I also hand baste then go around the outside edges, especially on large quilts.
