When you go into a fabric shop and see a piece of fabric that you just have to have, but don't know what you will do with it, how much yardage do you buy??
lol all of it. that way i can use some and still have some left over lol sound funny but in my case it is true. or else i get my kid to but hte ohter half of it. that way we both have some. blessings
If it is a partial bolt I would get all of it. mostly it will be 2-4 yards.
I usually will get 1-2 yards if I like it.
My MIL told me when in doubt buy 3 yds. That was fine at $3 - $4 per yd, But now with the prices at $10. plus a yds I just can't do that. So I get 1 yd.

as much as i have the money to get
I have started buying 2-3 yards...especially if the price is right. Prefer to stay under $7.00 per yard.
depends on scale and what it is. Civil war, big scale, enough for a backing...
small, Civil war shirting, fat qtr or up to 1 yd. Novelty, fat qtr or up to 1 yd panel~ 1 to 2 Mostly if it is a "timeless" type , like Civil War or reproduction, which will ALWAYS be around and in style, and I love it, I buy lots. If it is a flash in the pan, less is more... |
It depends on what it is. If it's something I'd probably use as a background fabric, then 3-5 yards. If it's a large scale print, 2-3 yards. Otherwise, usually 1/2 yard.
If I think about the fact that my stash is quite healthy as it is, and decide to walk away but I can't stop thinking about it, then I go back and get 2 yards! |
If the price is right, like on sale, then I get 2-5 yards. And if it looks like it's at the end of the bolt I get that too.
in today's market, I touch it, feel it make note of the maker/line name and then search the internet..if I can not find it for around $5-$7 then I go to my stash and try to find like it....thankfully I have a very large stash!
I'm in the 2-3 yard group. If I can afford 3 or 4 that's what I get. BUT if its on sale... And I REALLY likeit.. Look out. Lol
I only buy for the project I am doing and will add some extra yardage ( 1 yd or less) of the fabrics I really like. Its just too expensive now the buy just because I like it and may use it.
Just today I bought the rest on the bolt, 5 1/2 yards of high quality beautiful fabric for $4.a yard on sale. This way I have enough to be a backing if that's what I want to do.
If I really like it and can afford it, I usually buy several yards. Looking at my stash, I shouldn't be buying any, but I have a hard time just walking by!! |
If it's a blender (and I can afford/justify it) then I buy a couple yards at least. :)

Will I still be saying this when I go to Amarillo in a couple of weeks? LOL |
3 yards but if the price is great i'll buy up to 12 yards or more
Like it, 1 1/4 yard,
love it 3 yards, want to marry it, the rest of the bolt. |
Me? I never buy more than 1 yard My friends joke about how my mother bought me 10 fat quarters when I was sixteen and now 100's of small quilts and 30+ years I still have some left I love to make little quilts
