How much to charge someone for hand binding a quilt?

A friend wondered what people charged for hand binding a quilt. Anyone know what the going rate is? Thanks!!

Around here, they charge per foot or inch ... sorry can't remember the prices, as I decided I could save that $$ and learn to do it myself.

My longarmer charges as follows: for making and machine attaching the binding for the customer to finish, $1.00 per linear foot. For making and machine attaching the binding and finishing by hand, $3.00 per linear foot. In both cases, that's using fabric the customer provides.

I pay my LAQ $25.00. She does a great job.

I charge $30.00 for a queen, machine-stitched on front and hand-stitched to back.

you couldn't pay me enuf to hand sew anything! I absolutely hate hand sewing!

Dolphyngyrl 02-22-2012 07:27 PM

I've seen 35 for large quilts maybe 25 for small

I have tried machine sewing the binding with no luck. Whats your secret?

Silver Needle 02-22-2012 08:19 PM

I charge $.25 per linear inch because I love to do it. I like charging by the inch then there is no question on price.

kayquilt 02-22-2012 08:22 PM

I charge either 13 cents or 15 cents per inch depending on whether it is a straight edge or a curved edge. I feel that that is the fairest way. So far I haven't had anyone complain.

Well, you can see the range varies quite a bit. Guess it depends on how it's being done. Front by machine, back by hand; Front and back by machine. You do part and I do part... (There's the trimming too.) Is the binding prepared and ready to be attached or will you be preparing the binding too. You'll get it worked out.

As of a couple of years ago, my LAQ charged $35.00 to machine stitch the binding to the front, and hand sew to the back. Actually, I think she did the machine stitching, and farmed out the hand sewing.

I pay half the price of the quilting from my LAQ for sewing on the binding and then hand stitching

ArtsyOne 02-23-2012 04:53 AM

If I get a quilt with the binding already sewn to the front and seam cut to 1/4", then I charge a flat $50 for the hand sewing. Sometimes I think I make quilts just to get to the hand-sewing of the binding because I love to do it.
