My friends are taking me out tomorrow to do some major birthday shopping for me. I've been thinking about what I want. I got to thinking I could maybe get some fabric and make it into a quilt for the little guy's 1st birthday. I want to use the design I came up with (still need a name for it) and in black and white (I figure he's got enough blankets in pastels and other "baby" colors).
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...lackOrange.jpg I haven't gotten around to figuring out how big I want to make it and how much fabric I would need and I'm just not in the mood to figure that all out before tomorrow. Well, I doubt it'll get any bigger than a lap quilt and I think I want black fabric for backing...that's all I really know. Got any suggestions on how much I should buy without knowing exactly how big my quilt/blocks are going to be? |
No idea on the amounts, but I just wanted to say the pattern looks a lot like a tsunami wave.

Don't know exact amount but it is always good to "think big" I started one for my son thought I had enough and ran out then spent about 2 or 3 weeks waiting for the store to get more in. What a bummer! And with the colors you are choosing you can always use what you have left over on the next project. :D

Nice, I like it; truth told I first thought "Flying Flat Iron" when I saw it, but something about that curl says " Half-Snail" or "Crawling Along" (since it's for baby).

Hey, and I thought we all had a discussion about orange a while back. I vote orange and black.

I would call it... 'Monkey Dreams".
But that is just me. tim in san jose |

I remember seeing something at www.quilterscache.com some time ago, see Lesson 2 Calculating yardages. Marcia also included two links: www.quiltshiops.com/calculator.htm and www.vrya.net.quilt,index.php HTH Pat B |
Oops, the link www.quiltshiops.com/calculator.htm SHOULD read
www.quiltshops.com/calculator.htm sorry about that. Pat B |
Flying V ~ just remember whatever you think you need add a bit extra!
Have a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!    |
One of my strategies when I am buying fabric without really knowing how much I need is to buy lots of different smaller cuts in slightly different shades of the same color. Then if I run out, I can just go buy some different fabric of the same color family, and it still looks like I planned it that way.

Flying Goddess, do you use EQ for your designs? YOu are doing great work!! love this design

Something you may want to keep in mind when deciding on the block size is the finished size of the small squares in the center of the square-in-square block. With a 6" finished block (a 42x54 quilt) those little squares will be about 1.125". Making 10" blocks will give you a finished quilt roughly 70x90, still manageable for both you and the little guy, but increases the center squares to 1.75".
The yardage as needed for the pattern as drawn using 10" blocks would be roughly 2.875 yards of the black and 4.25 yards of the orange (plus backing and binding, of course). I know you already went shopping, sorry. I like your pattern. Reminds me of a Brontosaurus or the Loch Ness Monster. |

Oh Flying V ~ what a day!! I am glad to hear that it's not actually your real birthday after all that happened!! That can only be much better right???
Hope you spend the rest of the day doing something creative to get out your frustrations. Like something totally random and unplanned ~ take out your scraps and start sewing them randomly together. Iron them, cut them up again and resew. Continue this process until a)you run out of thread b) you've made a masterpiece or c)it's midnight and you ask yourself "what exactly am I doing anyway and why did I start this craziness! ~ don't forget to post the results!!!!! |

And then today....Mom's was angry with everybody all day. Mainly because of my brother! He's been a brat all day! I've been trying to help out all day...cleaned the dishes, dried the clothes, scrubed the stove...none of it matters. Zach does something and she yells at him and then yells at me! Just now he decided to go raid the fridge...after she got done yelling at him she yelled at me. "And you! Stay out of that fridge, too! And if you're not off Internet by 11 I SWEAR to GOD! ...quit your *bleep*ing bawling!" I can't help but cry.......I've been trying to help out and be good, even though I'm still mad and frustrated over yesterday, and I keep getting my ass chewed out. :( |
