I plan on a hunters star quilt at about 80" x 80" in two colors. I will go for 5" blocks as the rapid fire ruler starts at this size. How do I figure out how much fabric I will need?

:lol: :lol: thats the way I started buying fabric! At the end of the first project there was so much fabric left over that I had to buy more for the next project and so on and on.............So I would still like to be on the save side without adding to much to my stash.
The calculator is great, but since the hunter star is made of different shapes a bit complicated :oops:

Don't feel bad, Carol Doak told us that for her first quilt she had no idea how much fabric to buy so she bought 10yds of each fabric that she wanted to use. When someone asked her for the pattern and asked how much to buy, that's what she told them: 10 yds of each fabric in the quilt. Then she laughed and said that for the first couple of years all her quilts had the same fabric in them. LOL

For this hunter star quilt below, EQ says 6 5/8 of one color and 6 1/4 of the other - -keep in mind there are many variations of hunter star quilts and I just chose a simple one since you said you wanted it two color only. This uses 5 inch blocks and it will take quite a few of those!

"my" hunter star will have the stars a bit further apart so I will need slightly less and go for 6 yards each.

won't you then need a banding fabric to go between the stars? or more of the colors if they are used for the bands?

I dont know exactly what you mean :oops: in my version the trapezoid will be bigger, but also only with two colors

I thought you meant each star block would be apart from the others, so would need sashing between them. I think I misunderstood what you were saying.

The traditional way to estimate fabric needed is:
Measure each piece and color for that piece. Convert to square inches and then uiltiply by number of blocks.
Or - Looking at your picture, there are 196 blocks - 15 x16.
If each block finishes at 5" then add a couple inches for seams. This makes 7" 7x7= 49 square inches in each block
49"x 240 (number of blocks) = 11,760 squares inches Divide this by 1512 (square inches in a yd of fabric 42".
11,760 divided by 1512 = 7.7 total yards - Make it 8 yds.
If there are 3 colors of about equal amount then 8 divided by 3 = 2.66 yds (2 3/4) of each color.
Do the same for sashing and border.
Does this make any sense?
