How much fabric do I need of three different fabrics.
Hi Everyone. I have a question and I am sure that I have probably asked before but don't remember. But I have pen in hand and the pattern to write it down on my pattern for further uses.
I need to figure out how much actual yardage of 3 different fabrics I will need. I need 132 five inch blocks of color 1 I need 128 five inch blocks of color 2 I need 28 five inch blocks of color 3 Thank you so much for your help. I want to make my nephew and his girlfriend a quilt for their wedding. They just got engaged yesterday so there is no date set as of yet that I am aware of and I want to get started on the quilt as soon as I can just in case they have a short engagement. And NO I AM NOT going to make a wedding ring quilt...I have made enough of those to cure myself from ever wanting to do another. :))). |
I just used the quiltcalc app on my phone and it gave me these numbers:
Colour 1 - 2 3/8 yards Colour 2 - 2 1/4 yards Colour 3 - 5/8 yard I'm not sure how precise it is as I haven't used it for a quilt of my own yet, but I hope it helps! Oh, and the calculator assumed the width of fabric as 43 inches :-) |

5" squares... Fabric 40" X 36". (8 x5=40) (7 x 5= 35) so. You can cut (8 x 7) 56 (5") squares from one yard of fabric.
Hopefully this will help you see how to figure out your needs in the future. |
I tend to agree more with ckcowl by using 40 inches as a wof. Fabrics are not always 44/45 (like when I first started sewing) and you don't want to be short fabric, especially if you are unable to get more of it! Good luck with your quilt!

When you say 5 inch blocks, do you mean 5 inch finished or unfinished?

Here is a link to a free online calculator that I use ALL the time. Their instructions are simple and clear.
http://www.vrya.net/quilt/flash/QuiltCalc_Loader.html I don't mind doing the calculations myself but it is nice to not need to. |
Thanks for the post GingerK !!
