This is a stupid question but....I began collecting civil war, 1800's repro fabric for a future quilt. I have no color scheme in mind nor pattern.
There have been sales online and I have been buying 1, maybe two yards. Is this what you would buy? I fear I will not have enough for the unnamed future project. I already having hoarding tendencies so I am trying to avoid a large stash but the old fabrics really appeal to me. Would you buy more than 1 or two yds....just in case? |
I've got the same problem, lol!! I also want to do a C.W.R. quilt with no pattern in mind yet. Maybe these awesome quilters on this board can help us both, lol!!

Alot of civil war quilts are patchwork if that helps give you any ideas.

I would buy just a yard of each, but I like the scrappy look.

if i absolutely love the fabric and think it would work well for borders i buy 3 yards...so i can cut my borders to length, otherwise i collect 1 & 2 yard pieces of everything else...
i LOVE planning a quilt this way...collecting fabulous fabrics for when the perfect project comes along ;) |
This is my personal opinion only: When I did my CW quilt I used blocks from side to side, top to bottom with only 2" sashing in-between. Because I feel like if they had been fortunate enough to have a big piece of fabric they'd have made a shirt or a skirt with it. I wanted mine to look scrappy and with small pieces. It was a BOM so some of the blocks weren't what I would have picked. I used strips of the left over fabric, no set length, no set color combo, just a little of this and a little of that for the binding. It's not quilted yet.

Thank you. BTW, I bought an extra 1/3 yd each time we had a BOM of the same fabrics used for that month's block. That's what I used to make my extra blocks. The sashing is the same fabric that I have for the backing. I veered off my theory for that.

mamaw and norBanaquilts...I would agree that I like scrappy and/or patchwork too. I am not wanting a quilt of just two colors...guess I need to just let "my hair down" which would be hard since I have a buzz cut.
OK dkabasketlady...let continue buyin! |
