I'm sure that I am not the only one who buy's fabric with no project in mind, but how many yards do you guys buy knowing you want to make a quilt with no pattern in mind?

I do mostly scrapy quilts, I buy from fat quarter to 5 yards. Depends on colors and price.

KatFish 10-15-2010 07:34 PM

If I like it a lot, maybe 3 yards, unless it's on sale then maybe 4 or 5 yards. I try to keep a stock of blenders on hand so no matter what I buy I can use it.

Some times I just have to wait for the fabric to tell what it wants to be. lol :-)

dgsmom 10-15-2010 07:35 PM

i atlest buy 2 yards. im bad about buying not having a project for it. sometimes what i do is if im shopping and i come back to the same fabric 2 times i always buy it.

LindaM 10-15-2010 07:37 PM

I'm terrible - I used to buy at least 3 yards/meters, but I do have quite a good stash now; and am also buying better quality fabrics now so they cost more ... am more often now picking up 2 yards/meters. Unless I really love it, then will get 3 - 5.

Can't even get single fat quarters - seem to have to pick up two of each.

I try to limit myself to only the fabrics that make me drool - but gosh, there are soooo many :)

luvTooQuilt 10-15-2010 07:45 PM

For stash purposes I buy a yard..
If I like it I buy two ,
if i LOVE it 3-5 yards come home with me.. ..

p38flygirl 10-15-2010 07:49 PM

Alex Anderson always says to buy at least a yard if you really like it...and more if you really really like it...

cjomomma 10-15-2010 08:01 PM

Depends on the amount of cash I have to spend at the time. Thank goodness we don't have credit cards!!

joan_quilts 10-15-2010 08:03 PM

Ohhh, credit cards are bad! LOL I did "plastic surgery" to make sure I don't over spend. I usually buy 1 yard of what I like, more if I really like it and know I will use it.

lazyquilter 10-15-2010 08:07 PM

personally, I take one of the dog's coller and leash with me and after it's in the bag I can always say it followed me home.. Nha, it doesn't work, but at least I do try to be inventive. I pretty much get at least 2 yards even if I know I only need 1. Sometimes that's the fabric that you only buy one, need more, go back and it's sold out. So as of right now I am ready for the fabric intervention that my kids want to go into. Then they see the newest fabric and tell me never mind because they haave something they would love for me to make for them... Sale time.. 50% off.. I always try for as much of the 108" backing fabric. and always at least three yards. To me that's the best way to built that particular expensive fabric into a very nice cushion.

sueisallaboutquilts 10-15-2010 08:11 PM

Sometimes I wish that fabric manufacturers would take some time off so I could catch up hahaha
I find so many fabrics irresistible and don't have a lot of willpower :D

MaryStoaks 10-15-2010 08:12 PM

I buy a yard or two if I really like it and it's regular price. Today though, I bought 20 yards at my LQS. They had nice fabric that I will use for backings and bindings on clearence for $3 a yard.

paloma 10-15-2010 09:20 PM

i go in for thread then i see something that takes my eye so ten look for things to cord before you know i am buing 12 in of said fabric to the tune of 7 8 yrds it isso much fun cam make scrappy quilts or not

quiltluvr 10-15-2010 09:38 PM

Normally I get 5/8 or 3/4. Depends on the price. Occasionally I'll get a yard because I truly intend to make only scrappy or smaller projects for now. I've got enough to keep me happy for a long time to come, but when I have a few extra bucks, it goes to something quilty.

earthwalker 10-15-2010 09:41 PM

Sometimes I get just a metre, two if I really, really love it or it's a useful plain/blender. If it is an unbelievable bargain I have been known to buy 4 metres plus.

bigsister63 10-16-2010 07:14 AM

I buy 3 yds if the fabric is nice to be focal fabric for border and squares. Others I buy 1-2 yds depending on price/sale. I try not to buy without pattern in mind/hand so that I do not have a large stash of facrics that not go with anything. also I try not to buy backing. binding or sashing fabric until the squares or top is done due to I then decide what color/pattern will look nice with the finished top. I have changed my mind often so I now have unused facric that matches nothing at this time. I can not aford to have too much stash.

Dani 10-16-2010 11:49 AM

I have a nice stash, but it seems a lot of time I don't have what I need or want in a project.

I've decided that I will not buy any more fabric unless I have a project in mind so I get the exact amount I need for a specific pattern......unless I see something I ASOLUTELY CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT!

I buy lots of fabric that I have no project in mind for at the time of purchase. That is why I have 9 18 gallon tubs of fabric plus some in garbage bags that was given to me. I just Love fabric!!!

When Quilt in A Day of Paducah had their fabric for $4.00 a yard--I bought 15 yards of various colors and patterns.

Usually if I really like a certain fabric I buy at least 3 yards. I rarely buy fat quarters unless they are really on sale. I just like to buy yardage then i can cut it up however I want.

Here recently I purchase for projects only. A girl friend shared a box of fabric she had been given with a friend and myself. I washed and ironed for three days. I have about every color and from 1/2 yard to 3 yards lenghts.

Me too. I mostly do scrappy quilts so when it is on sale I will buy half a yard or a full yard of stuff I like. Also LOVE the FQ samplers from connecting Threads.

bejay28 10-16-2010 02:51 PM

I buy.......6 yards! I have waiting on the side line, 6 yards of one fabric and 6 of a matching fabric! I fully intend to make myself a quilt! Then before I leave the quilt shop, I make sure I have all the information on the fabric I just bought, in case I need more!

sewingladydi 10-16-2010 04:42 PM

2-5 yards, unless I know I'll use it in a scrap quilt or apron, then 1 yard. I don't usually buy fat quarters or less than 1 yard.

natalieg 10-16-2010 04:44 PM

With having to wash my fabrics first I usually buy 2 yards at a mininum.

littlehud 10-16-2010 07:37 PM

If I really like it I buy a couple yards. If I love it I buy 3-5 yards.
