It's a generous sized queen quilt and I have 1/2 yard. Math isn't my strong point and it's late and my brain isn't working very good. I don't want to start cutting and then discover I don't have enough.

Measure the perimeter of your quilt. Add 12-18 (corners, etc). Divide by 40. Round up.

Eg - quilt is 180" (after adding 12-18) -> Divide by 40 = 4.5 -> 5.

This is the # of strips you need. Multiply times how wide your binding is (2.25-2.5" usually). That's how much material you need.

5 strips x 2.5" = 12.5" (x wof) will be enough to do the binding

I round most all my quilt corners and I cut my bindings 2-3/4" wide and sew on with 3/8" seam and I sew about 8 or 9 crosswise grain strips together and I usually have enough. I might cut an extra or two more - if quilt is larger and I pull a little as I stitch binding on with a walking foot. If I have any leftover, I save them for scrappy bindings on scrappy quilts. Trying to add more binding strips on a large quilt is not easy.

My method is very unscientific. I like to use 2 1/2 in strips cut on the lengthwise grain--less strips to cut that way! I use 1/4 in seam. If I have enough length of binding fabric, or almost enough, then I just cut one extra strip to account for the corners. Not very scientific I know.

Half a yard of fabric probably isn't enough for binding for a queen size quilt. A queen size quilt usually takes 9 strips and you need 23 inches of fabric to cut that.

I have made many queen size quilts and if you cut your binding 2 1/2 inches like I do you will need at least 3/4 yd of fabric for 9 strips. That is what is needed. Marge
