I like to let the design of the quilt direct me on how to quilt it. For a softer quilt I have found keeping the quilting to a minimum helps me.

I do not like close quilting for bed quilts as they get stiff and lose their air pockets (which is what keeps me warm). But for a wallhanging dense quilting would be fine.

I think the ornately quilted quilts are gorgeous to look at....they're just not my cup of tea. Prefer minimally quilted, soft, drapery ones with Hobbs 80/20 batting and a utility quilt stitch. The first quilt I ever did was from the first Eleanor Burns log cabin pattern book. It was knotted and not very closely together and with the exception of some fading from multiple washings it has held together beautifully and drapes well.

I don't like a lot of quilting, I like the softer feel, sort of like a comforter. When I first started quilting I was given 13 bags of JoAnn's queen size batting, so that is what I use. I mainly make lap size or oversize crib quilts. I do buy a thinner batting for some of the crib quilts, but not always.

i like alot of quilting. Although, my current project is 18 months in the making and i think i'm so ready to see it finished! Hopefully 2 more months an it'll be done!

As a new quilter quilting the top quilting process was very confusing to me. I appreciate all the experienced responses to this post. I never thought the batting would make such a big difference in the feel of a quilt!

I'm in awe of the quilts with detailed, intricate quilting, but it's not what I personally enjoy doing. I love to piece a quilt but once it's time to put it on my long arm, I start procrastinating. I just don't enjoy that part of the process so I find reasons to put it off. As far as looks alone, I like an all over pattern so the piecing is what really stands out. Again, I admire the feathering, outlining and other skills of Charisma, Harriet and others, but I've accepted that I won't ever have those skills because I don't want them enough to work at it. I'd rather do a quick all over quilting and move on to my next piecing project.
One of the things I appreciate most about quilters is that we're definitely not one size fit all. There are so many variations within the art that one can never get bored! |

I think alot depends on the batting you use and the type of quilt you are putting it on.

Because I like a softer quilt, I don't like a lot of quilting. To much quilting seems to make it heavy and stiff. I try to see the recommendation on the package and go from there. My mom always hand quilted and I know she never did as much quilting as the package suggested. Her quilts never seemed to have the batting migrate or bunch up.
