I have a few toppers ready to be quilted and was wondering what is the best quilting to do on them? I want them to lay as flat as possible. Any opinions would be appreciated.

When I make toppers I do quilting depending on the design of the topper I've made...just like you would for any other type of quilt.

I have found that when I start the FMQ the quilt talks to me on what it needs. Sounds weird but I tend to listen to the voices now I have only done one other quilt but when I listen I love how it turns out. I also have done some research and I love the Leah Day quilting site she has some great ideas and the book called
Hari Walners : Continuous Line Quilting Designs.
Why I like it: This book has taken me from the oh my gosh how am I going to do this to start thinking of what block will work with my designs. He shows what batting looks like with what thread very cool! I LOVE the many designs and how they break them down and the pictures they have with them are amazing I feel like there is not one that I cannot do. His main point on FMQ is Practice, Practice and Practice.

If you are using a flatter batting like warm and natural, even with minimal quilting it will lay pretty flat.
I would think a smallish stipple design would flatten it out even more :D:D:D

I just free motion stipple. I do a larger stipple, using my basting stitch (5 on my dial). For me, the larger is easier to control and I like covering large areas at a time. My projects lay pretty flat.

I just stitch in the ditch, because my machine only does straight stitching. I guess it would depend on the pattern.

I just finished 8 table toppers and I stippled both the panel and borders. I have had better success in using this method and they do lie flatter.

I think you need to quilt within the measurements noted on the package of batting you are using. hth, MB
