When you shop for material without a specific project in mind, how much material do you usually buy? I am new to quilting, about 3 months.

I saw some material yesterday reduced down to $1.50 a yard. I have no idea what I would make out of it, but I keep on thinking about it. I even dreamed about it last night so know I really want it. It just seems to call to me.

I am trying to get my husband to drive me back there today as I can't drive. It is about 30 miles away. How much would you buy?

I know I should have bought it yesterday, but wasn't sure what I would use it for. But at the price, I have to go back. I was thinking (because of the price) about 4 yards. I figure I could always find something to use it for. It is white with pink flowers.

What is the average amount of material you would buy?

I usually get at least 3 yards, 4 if I think I will use it for the back of a comfort quilt.

If I could afford it I would but what is left at that price. You could make a top and back the quilt.

I agree with both ladies. Sounds like a beautiful fabric.

BellaBoo 02-08-2010 06:25 AM

I buy 3 yards of something I like or will use as blender fabric, 7 yards or more for backing, and 1 yard of fabric that will be good for accent color. If the fabric is good cotton then you can't not afford to stock up at those prices. Buy for backing if nothing else.

Thanks for the suggestions, I am on my way!

watterstide 02-08-2010 06:46 AM

i usually buy two yards of something i like,if i have no pattern ready for it. (and if i have the funds and a coupon)

I love baby fabrics and panels!

If I really like the fabric I buy 3-4 yards. If it's a great price and I can afford it I buy it all.

dkabasketlady 02-08-2010 09:20 AM

I usually buy 3-4 yds., but at that price I'd buy what was on the bolt if it's good quality material and you can afford it.

Esqmommy 02-08-2010 09:45 AM

For that price, enough to cover a backing or two for large quilts - 8-10 yards.

susiequilt 02-08-2010 09:46 AM

I hope it is still there when you get back! What a great price if it is quality fabric!

Well I bought 4 yards of that material, plus I found one with blue flowers that I bought another 4 yards.

Then I saw to very neutral pieces under a small pile so bought what was left of them. About 2 yards each.

I then stopped at a quilt shop and bought a couple of stencils and thread, and a new pair of scissors.

Had a great day an DH was wonderful. Never complained and actually pointed out a coupld of things!

I should have plenty to do, plus next week start a class and we make a project there.

I have been looking at patterns and I think I have one in mind for the flower material. Very light, very delicate looking. Plus I might hand quilt the center blocks (the flowers) as I purchased hoops on Craigslist 5 for $20.00. They are all over 18 inches large. Thought that was a great deal also.

When I first started quilting in 1992, I would get a quarter of a yard. Well, I now have a very big variety, but not much of any one print. Last year I made the decision that there would be no more quarters, no matter how tempting. I now get two yards. I may even go up to three soon.

Sounds like you had an AWESOME trip! You, I, and lot of others here are lucky enough to have a DH that will go with us and even help!

I call my daughter and hubby my Design Team!

Congrats on your super haul today!! :) :) :) :) :)

At that price, if I like it and think I can use it again, I would buy the rest of the bolt.
Then you have it for a back or two or at least several projects. Make sure it is a good quality fabric, not too loose a weave.

I have found that however much I buy, 'tis never enough!!! I'm always sorry I didn't buy more.

beachlady 02-08-2010 05:14 PM

Glad you went back and bought it. That certainly was a good price.

KarenBarnes 02-09-2010 10:00 AM

If you dreamed about it you must have really liked it! I say if you can afford it get what's left! The sales people prefer to finish a bolt rather than put it back! At least that's what I tell myself when I find a piece I really like! :) I find there is always something I can do with a pretty piece!

locoruner 02-09-2010 03:50 PM

I am also new to quilting and was just wondering the same thing!! I went to Joann's this weekend and found some really pretty blue and yellow. I bought 3 yards of each one. So I guess I did well.

dljennings 02-09-2010 04:08 PM

my lqs gives 10% off even sales prices if you finish the bolt. i'm afraid to tell you how i know that, but i know it REALLY well... if it is what i think of as a basic, something i can see as versatile, i get 3-4 yards, if not, and i need it but don't love it, a yard and i still walk out with 3-4 fat quarters every time i go to the store....they are like the chocolate at the grocery check out, can't leave without a couple!

Deenie 02-11-2010 08:49 AM

Would it make a good back for a quilt? At that price i would buy 6 yards, if i could use it for a back sometime! Deenie
