How much should I charge??? help
Hi, I made a t-shirt quilt for a co-worker it is a queen size 90" x 108"... he paid for all the materials etc...when I give him his quilt for his son I KNOW he is going to ask me how much $ and I know he will be willing to pay whatever but I don't want to be too high or too low :/ The materials cost about $100 for everything(top, sashing, batting, backing) since I am a super sale shopper ;) I have free motion quilted it on my machine quilting frame as well. I have worked on it off and on for the last 2.5 months..like 3-4hrs a week I suppose it would be.
-how much should I charge for making it? uff I am soo stressed over this, I hate deciding what to charge I always feel bad...please help me :) |
I just did a t-shirt quilt for a friend too....it was 16 shirts and fit a queen size bed. She bought the fabric, thread and interfacing (about $140) I was in the same situation.."what to charge". I probably had about 50-60 hours in it and had in done in just over 2 weeks. (She wanted it for Christmas...there was no rush...I just put my nose to the grindstone and got it done...other projects on the burners) I looked on Etsy and they were charging on average $350-400.00 (they supplied the materials. I finally decided on $200....she was THRILLED. I'm sure whatever you decide they will be satisfied just knowing that someone they knew did it. Good luck.

I have had people ask me how much I would charge to make a quilt. I tell thewm if they buy all the supplies it would $250.00 for a Queen size - I have had no takers, but that is what I have decided would be my price.

-Yes I agree with you, I need to come to a conclusion on my price and just stick with that :) That way when people ask I already know the $ figure and can tell them right away. |
A rule of thumb is 2 to 3 times the NON SALE PRICE of all your materials.
|
when you use your sale-priced fabrics for a consignment quilt, you may end up replacing that fabric with full-priced. thus, the other party gets the best deal, no you. i'd recommend figuring the non-sale price as paperprincess said.

I have made several. I charge $450 for queen size INCLUDING all materials (customer supplies the T-shirts ONLY) which consist of interfacing fabric for sashing and backing and batting. So take it from there.

Please, do yourself a favor and don't just "blanket quote" (pun intended) a price...you need to look at what you're getting into BEFORE you tell them "how much"....it's okay to ballpark, but be sure to make that clear...when I first started, I used to charge a set price: until, that is, I did a T-shirt memory quilt! My pricing detoured to the "I need to see what you have in mind" mode very quickly after that. Good luck!

When I make a t-shirt quilt for someone, it usually ends up being about 77" X 85" and I charge $350.00. I add a 2" border around every t-shirt block and add two borders to the quilt before finishing it on my longarm. I also include a matching pillow case with each quilt. Depending upon the details involved in your quilt, for something that size I would probably charge about $450 for it. I make no excuses for what I charge because I think my time is worth more than minimum wage. Here's a picture of my latest t-shirt quilt. I work at a High School and asked each section in our band to donate one of their section shirts to this quilt. They will sell it next week in their Silent Auction fundraiser. They provided all of the shirts, and I donated my time and materials. We have an awesome band!

Interestingly enough I just had people inquire as to t-shirt memory quilts. I came up with this document for my pricing based on the average for what it would sell for on Etsy. Does this help?
Why did you not agree on a price before you started? I think this is why it might feel more awkward for you. Perhaps you should consider setting a general price list before you make other quilts on commission to help you feel better and to not have a shell-shocked reaction of clients when you give them the price. Just a thought. Good luck! _____ The listed prices cover all material (including the fabric for 2 inch sashing and 2 inch borders, backing, 1 inch binding, batting, thread) and labour. All quilts are $15.00 per shirt. Add $3.00 per shirt if you want to add sashing. Sashing and backing can be your choice of color. Include any preferences with your t-shirt shipment to me. Shirt sizes are based on 15" squares. I will do any number of shirts that you like. Without Sashing With Sashing Square Layout 9 shirts = $135.00 (51”x51”) $162.00 (55”x55”) 3x3 12 shirts = $180.00 (51”x66”) $216.00 (55”x72”) 3x4 16 shirts = $240.00 (66”x66”) $288.00 (72”x72”) 4x4 20 shirts = $300.00 (66”x81”) $360.00 (72”x89”) 4x5 30 shirts = $450.00 (81”x96”) $480.00 (89”x106”) 5x6 42 shirts = $630.00 (96”x111”) $756.00 (106”x123”) 6x7 The cost of shipping will be added to all orders. |
THAT IS WHAT I charge is 200 to 250 and they buy all the supplies. be sure to tell them in advance on the price that way they know and they can get the money together. they get the quilt when you get the money unless you know them well. good luck you will get faster as you do more. that is a lot of hours. post a pic of it so we can see it.

when asked to make bed size quilts I say right out I would love to. My base price is 400.00 to start. I get no takers and I can busy myself with my own quilting. I do get requests for baby quilts at 80.00. These are agreed to all the time.

i think you should have discussed a price before you agreed to make it- it seldom works well to (spring) a price on someone after the fact...if you are going to make quilts for people to purchase the price should be discussed & agreed upon before ever starting the project.
figure out how much time you have into it then decide how much your time is worth...then adjust that to what you think is fair to both of you- i charge $20 an hour for sewing...i also have quilting fees- if i am making a quilt for someone who has supplied the materials (very seldom) we decide if it will be charged by the hour or by the project- pricing is discussed, agreed on and a deposit is paid with the balance due upon completion. |

I once tried making a t shirt scarf for personal use and had difficulty sewing the t shirts well. What is the best stitch to use and all hints would be welcomed. If someone will basically pay what you ask and don't want to overcharge asking other quilters was a good idea.

Good luck.
Some of the people I know would take the quilt and run - they would take my statement of 'I need/want the practice' at face value - if I was lucky, they MIGHT remember to say 'thank you' Let us know how it turns out for you. |
I found somewhere, where they charge $10 a tshirt without sashing, and $12 a tshirt with sashing, but that would include all the materials except the tshirts of course. Since they purchased the material, I totally think what you charged was right on.

The medium labor charge is 3 1/2 times the retail cost of materials. No one can find fault with that charge. Most service providers charge a lot more. It cost $38 to have a new zipper put in DH's coat.

Thanks for starting this post, just the info I need right now. I got several serious questions regarding T-Shirt Quilts and Memory Quilts.

-For sewing the t-shirts together you must iron on a piece of material with glue on one side called interfacing. I got my interfacing from Joann fabrics @ .99 a yard...You just iron it on the backs of the shirts to they won't stretch on you. As far as a stitch goes, I just used a straight line stitch on mine. Hope this helps :) |
