How to Quilt PP Stars Quilt?
1 Attachment(s)
This quilt has been an UFO for a couple of years because it's currently in a box at my parents' house on a different continent. In a few weeks, I will be reunited with it and I'm planning to quilt it this winter.
First, I was thinking on hand quilting it. But it's 90" and the biggest quilt I made so far (there's another one in the making that might become even bigger...). I'm just afraid that 5 months won't be enough to hand quilt it and I really want to finish it this time! So I think I will machine quilt it. However, I'm at a loss of how to quilt the stars. Probably SID on the star outlines, but then how do I fill the stars? I would appreciate any suggestions! |
Beautiful stars! I would fill the block backgrounds, then SITD all the details of the stars.

I made these stars when we made the 50 paper pieced stars book. Most of the stars are eight pointed. I would stitch around the outside of each star then follow a design on the inside of each star as dictated by the piecing. When I did mine, I did an overall meandering but it was a queen size and I didn't feel up to making each one separate. It worked fine but could have been better.

Lovely top! I think I might SITD the stars and sashing to start. Then I might go with traditional 1/2 feathered wreaths in the white and feather ropes in the borders.

Thanks! So, if I understood right, the suggestion for inside the stars is to just follow whatever pieces there are and SITD, right? Sounds doable, although there is one or two that have a lot of pieces... Yes, I was thinking of trying some feathers ini the white triangles as Tartan suggests.
What would you suggest for outside the stars, in the star blocks? |
Perhaps a tiny meander around the stars? I did that for my stack n whack - looks good.
|
You could also do some hand quilting combined with some machine quilting.
|
Wow! I don’t know about quilting but it is a very striking top! Great job!
|
Monale, I would follow every inside seam, just see how the star divides and go around the sections in the stars. But that's just me, I think it would be prettier than the over all meander I did. For me it's one of those if I ever make again, that's what I'll do.

It's a lovely quilt!! I don't have suggestions for the quilting, but I will say I'm a little concerned about how full and wavy your borders are. Is it just the way the quilt is laying? It looks like you will have a challenge on your hands.... :o
