How to quilt a strip quilt?
 

Hello I have a quilt top that is made of about 2.5 inch strips of fabrics. How would you quilt the top? I am having a hard time figuring out what to do.

I did an all over design with curls. I like to contrast the quilting with the piecing and since you have all straight lines, an edge to edge with curves/curls/swirls would be good.

Are you planning to quilt on a domestic machine or a longarm frame? I agree with PaperPrincess if you are planning to use a frame. If you are quilting on a domestic machine, what I would do is wavy lines from one end to the other. You can use a walking foot to do this and simply move the quilt from side to side to create the waves. I will see if I can post an image of what I am thinking of:

I quilted stitch in the ditch & then an echo straight line to the right 1/4".

I like to use a wave stitch over the seam line on those with my walking foot. It's very quick and easy.

I do a lot of cross hash. Its my favorite, as I can use my walking foot and it looks nice too.

You could use a fancy stitch in the seam lines.

I am partial to crosshatching. Any of the ideas listed above are very good. Figure out what your comfort lever in quilting is and go with it.

I did a couple of jelly roll race quilts and did exactly what Prism99 posted the link to. I used irregular wavy lines with my walking foot on my DSM and it turned out great! I used about 3 per strip with a varigated King Tut thread. It was easy and these were the most fun quilts to quilt too. I think the more irregular the better. And the wavy lines being curvy soften all the straight lines of the pattern. Good luck and enjoy!

Thank you for the great advice. I already had the quilt on the frame with the stripes going from back to front. I decided to leave it that way and am doing wavy lines across the stripes. It looks good. This is my first time using variegated thread.
