How to quilt this???

1 Attachment(s)
I have my quilt pinned and ready to FMQ, as I am not real good with this part I played around on a piece of paper to find a easy design that I could do, one is loops with a star here and there and another is the same loops with a heart here and there. I think I can do both of these designs without to many mistakes.
I would love to be able to do some of the quilting that I have seen on this forum but I don't think I can pull that off at this time.
I can do a all over FMQ design without to much trouble, so do you think that this quilt will look ok with one of the these all over quilting designs?

Thanks so much..

Not sure if you are quilting on a LA or a DSM. Would help to know that.

Yes, I think what you suggested would be fine. Honestly, though, I'd probably try to quilt feathers inside the stars & then ghost the stars in the 4-patch blocks. Yes, it would take more time & wouldn't be as "perfect", but I've found that the more complex the design, the less likely people are to notice any little inconsistencies. And I've personally found that doing the loops & stars pattern really isn't much easier than doing a basic feather because of all the start & stops for the points of the stars.

The other option would be to just quilt "stripes" inside the stars to tie in with the striped fabrics you used. You could do that FMQ or with a walking foot. Regardless, it's an adorable quilt & will look beautiful no matter what! :)

Love your quilt!! Whatever works for you and you'r comfortable doing. Your thoughts sound good.

Yes it would look good with all over design

kathy 02-02-2016 02:46 PM

even just loops would look good, some big some small

I would sew curves on the inside of the stars from corner to corner. Then I would find a stencil that would fit inside the large four squares. This is a very pretty quilt. I look at what others have done to their and do what you can.

I will be quilting this on my DSM but it does have an 11 inch throat space so that helps... I am really not good with feathers I have tried to do them on a sample piece of fabric but they just don't come out looking like a feather, I really need to practice more before I try them on a quilt. For some reason I can't get my mind around then , when I try making then they come out looking bad.. I can see where feathers would look so good in each part of the star but I think it will have to wait till some other time and quilt..So I am back to a all over design..Thanks for you advice..I'll practice more..

Wow! ManiacQuilter2 that quilt was so pretty but I really don't think I could do that, it's got a design like feathers and as I said I don't think I can quilt feathers, they never look like a feather by the time I get done..maybe I'll try. I just hate to have to rip out stitches..after thinking a little,I could outline the star, I think I could do that.... Thanks

I just recently finished a Hunters Star. http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...e-t275055.html. I did an allover meander and did a flower loop in each of the star "petals". Went very quick and easy.

Wow, what a beautiful quilt. What ever you do you can not take away from this lovely quilt. Good Luck!

Quilt lady, oh I feel you on the feathers issue. I have been FMQing on my home machine and I cannot get feathers. An all over quilt pattern would look good. You could echo the shapes of the stars first. I have had luck with that, though it could be because I am getting good at accurate angles in FMQing, but curves defeat me.
It is rather crude, but I have referred to some of my worst feather attempts as ....well, let's call it hot dogs and testicles, no two alike. I have been using scraps to make 2 foot by 2 foot quilts to practice curves and feathers, so far they are dog beds.

I'm sure whatever you do will be beautiful. I just learned to do feathers myself a few months ago. My first attempts were a bit of a mess. The biggest issue for me was practicing drawing the feathers on paper. That not only helped build visual memory, but it also helped me get a better drawing on my quilt with the Ultra Clean markers so I could follow along. Any time I had a couple minutes of downtime at work, I was practicing drawing those feathers. I'll see if I can get a photo posted of the Irish Chain quilt I did with a feathered wreath later. Having issues with reducing size of photos at the moment, but I've received lots of compliments on them even though they're not as even as I'd like. I took an online class with Green Fairy Quilter (Judi Madsen) at https://www.iquilt.com/course/quilti...-a-difference/

It made a huge difference in my ability to draw & quilt feathers. I can't do the super fancy wavy feathers that she does ... yet. But am getting pretty decent at doing basic feathers. You get 20% off the class if you're an AQS member & an additional 40% off through 2/3/16 with the code IQFUN.

Laurajbr you are so funny, I'm glad that I am not the only one that has so much trouble with quilting a feather, mine look pretty bad, as I said I just can't get my mind around making them, I keep practicing and one day I may get it so they look good..Thanks you gave me a good laugh..

What a gorgous quilt! Love the colors. I think your quilting idea would look nice

nannyrick 02-03-2016 11:28 AM

That is one gorgeous quilt!! I think your all over loops would look fine. Post a pic when you finish, OK.

Mariposa 02-03-2016 11:30 AM

Looking good! Whatever pattern(s) you decide on will be great!

quilttiger 02-04-2016 03:34 AM

Hope this helps...I also had trouble making FMQ feathers for the longest time until I took a class from Judy Woodworth quite a few years ago. She showed me how I could pretend I was sewing part ways around a coin before returning to the spine for the next feather. That was a real breakthrough moment!

jmoore 02-04-2016 04:24 AM

Your quilt is beautiful... I would do an all over design if that's what you feel most comfortable with. There are so many tutorials on Youtube for different designs but, if you're like me, you would have to practice them before putting the needle to your pretty project.

kbeuchert 02-04-2016 05:51 AM

My suggestion for you would be to do the continuous curves inside the stars, as mentioned in an earlier post, then do your meandering in the remaining area. It would be the best of both worlds and let you get your feet wet with the custom quilting. You could either use the stars or hearts, or both in your meandering! It's your quilt!

Fabric Galore 02-04-2016 06:36 AM

I would outline the stars and then shadow stitch within the stars. The rest of the quilt I would doing a wandering stitch. I took a class in long arm quilting and the best idea I got was to buy a piece of tempered glass and put tape around the edges. Use a felt tip marker and trace the feather pattern and then wipe it off. Do this over and over until you have the motions almost memorized and your hands are comfortable doing this pattern. It works with any pattern and it has helped me tremendously.

Your quilt is beautiful!!!! I have no quilting advice except to do something you are comfortable with. :)

I am not good at quilting so will not give advice..Only a comment - Beautiful quilt!

Mrs. SewNSew 02-04-2016 09:45 AM

It's a beautiful quilt! I would outline your stars and squares and do long stripes in the border. I am sure whatever you do it will look lovely!

Because you sound like you are relatively new to FMQ I would quilt (I like to do) small-medium stippling (not mini-not meandering) in the background. This is easy to do on a large quilt. I would either stitch in the ditch or stitch 1/4" inside the stars or both. This would be easy to do on your DSM, especially if you have a 1/4" foot. It will also give you better control of your quilting and prepare you for more difficult designs.

Another tip about quilting nice feathers....when you first start quilting feathers, draw them on your quilt with a water soluble marker before you quilt them. You will be surprised at how well they come out. With experience you can quilt the feathers without marking them first.

Ellen

I like the look of overall quilting and think it would be great for this quilt. Nice quilt!
