How to quilt?
2 Attachment(s)
These rabbits are hand appliqued and I"ve quilted around them with matching black thread. I used white thread and did SID around the sashing. There is too much open space, especially for a baby quilt that will be laundered frequently. How do I quilt the open space? I don't want a lot of quilting, just enough to stabilize the blocks.
Thanks! |
Cute quilt! If you have already outline stitched the motifs and the sashing, you have a problem with adding more quilting. From what I can see in the pictures, the extra fullness in the blocks is going to limit what you can quilt in them.

Cute rabbits! It looks like you've done a great job so far. I think I would try echo-quilting around the rabbits.

Does your machine have any tie tack features? I might do a little almost stitched in place zig zag stitch dotted around the background that would allow you to distribute the fabric and have it puff up between the tacks. Yes it would require a lot of burying the threads after each tie tack but scattered about 3 inches apart in the background might be an idea.

What about little clover plants spotted here and there by embroidery. They could be a little puffy to help settle the blocks.
|
If you know how to make French knots, you could do a few of those sprinkled around each bunny.
|
Thanks, everyone. All good ideas. Another thought was radiating lines from the center out. Maybe I'll do a combination, something different for each block!
|
I like the idea of rays going from the center like a sunburst. That would be really cute and fill in those voids.

If you're using a domestic machine, I'd say possibly diagonal lines but skipping the applique. If using a quilt machine, possibly pearls or bubbles to fill in around the appliques. Those are my 2 "Go To" patterns I use. And of course crosshatch is always a favorite to me too.
|
I would do a crosshatch in the white. I do the crosshatch quilting around applique often. This is just MHO.
|
As quiltwoman suggested French knots, I think that would be perfect. I am very visual and it would be very pretty and durable. Maybe try it on one block.
Your quilt is just darling and so well planned out. All the bright colors are going to stimulate the baby. You have done a wonderful job!!! |

Thanks for all the good suggestions. Here's what I did using hand quilting. Good thing I don't need this finished until September!
|
I also think the echo quilting around each animal would look good.
