How to quilt with wool precuts

I purchased 11" wool precuts years ago. I want to make a quilt with them. I am clueless how to do so!! Do they need to be preshrunk? Wouldn't that wreck them? What do I use for backing? Help!! Thanks for any advice!

HI and welcome to the board. Usually wool precuts are already felted and they are used for wool applique. Felting process preshrinks so they should be machine washable with no issues. The beauty of felted wool applique is felted wool doesn't fray so it is all raw edge with usually a blanket stitch done to adhere the shape to your background. Traditionally wool for this purpose is cut in sizes 8" x 14" and sold in bundles but sizes do vary from supplier to supplier.

You can freely mix wool with cottons. Many people use wool as the applique and a standard quilting cotton as the background.

Here is a website to give you ideas of what can be done with felted wool.

I have a friend that made a wool quilt just as it comes off the bolt. She did 6 or 8 inch squares and hand quilted with a big stitch. Unfortunately I don't know how or if she has washed it. Some wool now is washable in cool water. Not sure if you wanted to do as appliques or as blocks. If applique it is usually felted first.
