How to sew velvet or velour?

I have a box of cut velvet squares that I purchased from a garage sale and I am having an awful time sewing these blocks together. I have put my walking foot on, lenghten my stitch , pinned the squares together and nothing seems to help.I need help from all you , please.

I have not done any sewing on velvet for years (maybe 30!!!), but I sure remember it being "slippery." I hope someone has an answer for you though. I will be reading this to see if I can remember what I used to do.

Velvet also has an 'up' and 'down' to it. Don't know if that will matter or not for your project, but it's just another thing to be aware of. One way, it looks 'shinier' than the other way. Sort of like petting a cat 'with the fur' or 'against the fur'

You may have poly velvet instead of cotton. I had same problem with a client's quilt. I just threw out slippery stuff and used cotton velvet. But I only had 1/2 yd, so not big investment.

One of the ladies in one of my quilting groups is making a velvet and silk quilt, she backed everything with a light weight muslin, Lots of extra work, but hope this helps.

Good Luck

You should have a setting for stretch fabric; you'll want to use that. If you don't then use a very small zigzag stitch. By using this stitch it also keeps the stitches from breaking once they are together.
