how to transfer applique placement?
Any suggestions on transferring applique placement pattern? I am making a medallion block using fusible web for the applique design, and then will hand blanket stitch. There are lots of scrolly pieces, and I am having trouble getting them placed correctly. The background fabric is a little too dark to use a light box. Any help will be appreciated! :)

I would suggest folding your background into 'workable' areas (1/4ths maybe?) and lightly pressing each fold to get your 'centers' of each region. Then figure your placement for the scrolly designs within each area, fold in half (or other dimensions) and pin or pinch fold them to get your 'mark'
I have done similar applique and that was easiest for me. Remember for every one way to do something - there are others! Do show us your finished medallion please! Love this look! What are you going to put around it and how big are you going to finish it off at? |
You can do a full sized paper pattern. Sew over the design with a large machine needle with no thread. Once the outline is perforated, pin it on the background. Find either pounce powder or baby powder and using the pounce pad or a foam paint brush to gently transfer the powder through the holes onto the background. Make sure whatever powder you use won't stain when ironed over after your appliqué is finished.

Try some lightweight interfacing. Draw your design on this and pin it on top of the background fabric. You can place the applique pieces under this and see where they need to be lined up.

The book I have suggests making a vinyl overlay. You trace the pattern on it, place it over your fabric and put your pieces on under the vinyl.

Ahhh...thank you for all of ghe suggestions....will try a vinyl overlay-path of least resistance! Lol.
I have no specific plan for the rest of this quilt-if yhe medallion turns out as i hope, i will add rows of stars geese and borders....i want to practice using EQ to help with the layout...baby steps! ;) |
