I have this beautiful fabric that has larger patterned stripes, and I want to use it as a border on a wholecloth wall hanging. I thought it'd be better than piecing it because I didn't want to take away from the quilting on the wholecloth. I just don't exactly know how to cut it and still be able to use the whole pattern of the fabric. There are actually different stripes in different sizes throughout the pattern. How do I go about cutting it to piece it against my wholecloth allowing it to not be cut off at all? I hope I am making sense.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would cut it so the narrow border is on the inside of the quilt, the larger being the outside :) I'm not good at describing things.
always remember the 1/4 inch seam.

I'm actually doing just that right now. I measured the width of all of the stripes of the border/pattern fabric. Then measured the whole cloth. I doubled the pattern and added it to the whole cloth length. This is the minimum length to cut one border side. You will want to add more if you want to center a particular point of the border pattern on each side of the whole cloth. Then the corner miters will look the same. HTH

I am a bit confused by your statement about saving it and not cutting off.
If you are using it to border, you will need 4 repeats of any one of the strips you will use. You didnt say how much stripe fabric you have and how large your wallhanging is. If you will tell us these two things then I can give a more informed answer . size of center of wallhanging and yardage of your fabric and how many repeats across the strip fabric.

Sorry. the wholecloth is 33" square, and I've probably got at least 4 yards of the striped fabric. The fabric print itself repeats the same stripes: larger, smaller, larger, smaller, etc. There are 11 large stripes total across the fabric. I hope I understood what you were asking me!

can you possibly miter cut so it would end up looking like a picture frame and be continuous at the same time .

Oie. Now I've got to read up on how to do a miter border!! I just think it would really frame the quilting beautifully, simple yet elegant. The rich colors would ad a 'pop' to the white on white wholecloth.

As for my question about cutting off the pattern, would I just measure 1/4" out from the end of the stripe pattern & cut so when I piece it together it would be close to the edge??

Here's a picture of the wholecloth with the layout I was thinking about. I think it's look cool with the white and bright borders. Any other ideas for the project would be greatly appreciated!

Mitered borders are easy, I love doing them. Would look great with this border
