How Would You Do This?

I've been puzzling over this quilt...How would you piece this? Or is it applique? Any ideas?

Thanks, Watson

I followed the link of the pin to the site, somewhere in the series of pictures mentions book 3-D Explosion-Carla Gulati
see also www.doodlepress.com/free-pattern.php it says use applique of choice.

QuiltnNan 11-18-2017 09:28 AM

yes, he put Carla, but her name is Cara, and you can buy her book here http://www.doodlepress.com/store.php
but i love that you put a link to the free pattern Nerys

Thanks! She has some amazing designs on her site.
One day I'll figure out how Pinterest works.

When you do, let me know. I waste more time trying to find info about the pictures on Pinterest.

When I clicked on the link in your first post there is a whole page of pictures, which one are you asking about?

Watson 11-18-2017 06:33 PM

That's funny...it's just one for me.
It's the one that looks like a multi coloured ribbon.

Try raw edge applique. I would imagine the design is drawn on newsprint paper, sections and fabric pieces cut out and put on a background fabric with double sided fusible, then stitched round the edges and elsewhere. This is another 'one day' project for me.

I had a whole page of pictures too, but then I realized I wasn't logged in to Pinterest. Once I logged in, it went to the right pin.

And yes, it does look like applique to me too.

I'm with you all about pinterest; I think it's hard to find anything 'specific'. You type in something specific and get EVERYTHING you have to wade through; not worth the time. So I'd be interested too if you find an 'easy way'.

Fascinating

Watson if you click on the link you posted then there is a box that says visit. Follow that link to her gallery. I have several of these designs on my bucket list. I can't wait to see what you do with it.

marshaKay 11-19-2017 07:31 AM

if you click on free pattern, on the top of the page, you will see that these are made with appliques. The particular one you are interested in is stretched on canvas. It is a small 8" X 24" quilt used as a wall hanging. Very pretty. Just hit the Visit button to find out the particulars.

So, while I'm asking questions, this is machine pieced....how in the world do you machine piece something like that?
http://www.bryerpatch.com/images/qui...tion1_411k.jpg
Is each semi-circle cut out and then pieced onto the preceding one?
So, starting at the lower left corner, you would begin with the dark blue and then the lighter blue strip and then the green/black strip, etc? And, you'd have some Y seams here and there where you would sew sections together?

Any insights?

If you would like to try one of her applique patterns for free, try this flower one:
http://www.doodlepress.com/free-pattern.php
maybe you can then create your own ribbon after learning the technique? worth a try. :)

oops...sorry. same link as Nerys. Thanks for this...I'm going to try it myself.

I wasn't looking at that quilt from bryerpatch earlier, but this one shouldn't be too difficult at 30x30.
Draw a similar design on A4 paper, number each section, starting at the bottom left. Scan and print at 300%, you will probably get 9 pages to tape or glue together. Cut out each piece of the enlarged pattern, one by one, then use as a template to cut the fabric, include seam allowances. Pin/glue together and sew.
Or - you could fold the seam allowance first on one side, and lay & pin in place, sew with a tiny zigzag, blanket or straight stitch.

Watson I have looked at many of these same designs and wondered how they could have pieced them. I have tried some others I have no idea. I would love to find a class on how to do some of these things.

I'd appliqué it. She has a download available

I took one of her classes at Rd2Ca and it was a blast!! It is paper pieced using glue and templates, you really need the book, but once you see how she does it, it is really easy and fun. You can get all kinds of ideas!!

Watson 11-21-2017 02:50 AM

M cubed....what is the name of the book?

I’ve made a few of Carols patterns, they were all appliqué. I love her work. Start with paper & draw a design ( like the first picture of twisty ribbon then I retrace another one keeping one as the Master and the second to cut up. Cut apart all the pieces, I add 1/4”-1/2” around each piece that way I can trim or have enough to place under a piece....

Watson 11-21-2017 05:27 AM

Now that I've gone back and looked at the second quilt I posted, I can see that of course it is paper pieced! How else could she have done it? I would never have thought of paper piecing such a big piece.
Thanks, M cubed, for solving one mystery for me.

Watson

PS...and, of course this artist makes her own hand-dyed fabrics so that makes it even more spectacular.
