How would you Piece this quilt?

I am reposting this question again...I used the wrong photo before and it was removed. So here it goes.

Would you make this by making long strips or would you make blocks and sew them together? Or????

JenniePenny 02-03-2014 10:14 AM

I would use long strips and sew in diagonal rows.

clem55 02-03-2014 10:50 AM

I think I would be sewing some blocks together first, then the blocks in diagonal strips.

kristakz 02-03-2014 11:07 AM

I'm with clem55. I don't like sewing long narrow rows together - things never seem to stay straight. So I'd make blocks- 4 patches or 16 patches probably, depending on the block size, and then sew those together into rows.

I agree with the long rows. When you cut the triangles for the row ends, make sure that you cut them so the fabric grain is on the outside.
Look for tutorials on setting blocks on point. They will have calculations on how to cut the triangles.

Here is a chart that does the math for you for corner and setting triangles. http://quiltville.com/onpointmath.shtml

I'd go with this option as well. Have done numerous quilts 'on point' and it's far easier to do the rows I think.

IMHO- if its two tone ( two colors) id cut 4 strips, sew them together cut into 4 patches.. the 'ends' id make last as id oversize the block and trim down..

the only reason id sew sqs to sqs if it was scrappy..

Depending on the width of your strips, I would sew WOF sewing an even number of strips that will be approximately 18" wide. Then sub cut them into long strips. Press your seams towards the red. Keep one strip of each color to fill any gaps. I am doing a table runner with the same design 5 squares across and 20 squares down. Only suggestion I would make is to have all your setting triangles to be the same color. It will make things simpler. Good Luck !!

Great advise...thanks - and the link was appreciated!

I would use long strips, much faster and I find the blocks seem to line up easier.

I've put together a few quilt tops made up of smaller blocks. I've use the strip method and the patch method. I like to put together four or nine patches and then sew them together. I think it goes faster -- more "instant" gratification. Maybe it just seems less tedious to me to work with larger units. I've found that the result is pretty much the same.

When I first started quilting, I found a really neat post on a blog showing how to take a quilt, which was sewn in straight rows, and make a couple of diagonal cuts to turn the whole thing on point. I couldn't find it, but did find this youtube clip which shows briefly how it's done.

I think this might be the link you're looking for. I was intrigued by this approach too, but haven't yet had time to try it. Let us know what you decide to do and be sure to share the end product. Happy quilting!

same here .....

I would probably make blocks and then sew them together - seems to give me better control.

cindynvb 02-05-2014 09:08 AM

If you're using a limited color scheme I'd strip piece it, if you're using scraps I'd cut and sew blocks.
I like the links for cutting a straight quilt to make it into a diagonal set.

I'd do strips, and sew in diagonal rows also~

wildyard 02-05-2014 09:19 AM

I'm in the strip piecing corner for a two color quilt.

justflyingin 02-05-2014 12:06 PM

When I've done on point, I've done it in strips and then sewn the strips together. As it grows it feels great!

MargeD 02-05-2014 12:35 PM

I think I would make short strip sets, then sew them into blocks and set them on the diagonal.
