It looks nice but I think I see what is disappointing you. The echoing is not ending up in the same places on the star but it may be less noticeable when the whole blocks is quilted. If you used pencil, I don't know if it will allow you to change your mind on this block. How about quilting each block differently?

the pencil washes out. i can use a white chalk pencil or a blue to change my mind. i've never had trouble with staining or anything.

the star has been unstiched. but nothing new is emerging from the looking :(

Cindy Needham has a class that is awesome that shows you tons of ideas. She is an awesome teacher on Craftsy/ Totally worth the money for her classes.

How about using the same motif from the border in the block? One of the half motif would fit nicely in the diamond shaped pieces. If you slightly enlarged the motif and put one whole side by side motif in the larger sections with another half motif to fill in the point. I would then SITD around the edge of the large star shape and corner squares.

just a partial reply: in the blue spaces, i would quilt straight lines like piano key borders. in the white diamonds, i would use side to side s shapes.

I kind of like the echoing of the star. With careful marking would the design be consistent from one block to the next?
