How would you quilt this ?

1 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone
I have been looking at this and not sure how to quilt it.
Now remember i,m a new quilter so nothing fancy .
Was thinking of using invisible thread and doing a ditch stick just on the black parts.
Then i thought of white but i,m not sure if it would stand out to much.
Or what about sewing down the centre of the black with white thread.
Thanks for the help

Tom

If your machine has decorative stitches, I'd use black thread and do a decorative stitch through the middle of each black strip. But first stitch in the ditch around each sashing strip and do a decorative stitch through the middle of those too.

Very pretty! I agree with the stitch in the ditch with black thread.

One easy technique I use when nothing else seems to 'click', is to sew wavy vertical lines down the length of the quilt, about 1.5" apart. In the case of your quilt, I'd use black thread.

I just had another idea... using a walking foot you could do angled lines over each block, like the angles in your piecing, only a different pattern--black thread. Keep within each block and then do a decorative stitch in one of your colors, like a curlique or something, in the sashing and outer border. Can't explain it very well, but I see it in my mind and it would look really cool with this design.

Exactly what I was thinking. it's looks great now, but will look awesome when you're finished.

I would use invisible thread and stipple all over. It will be quilted nicely and still show the pattern.

dunster 09-22-2015 08:28 PM

Please don't use white thread on this beautiful quilt! I would first SITD (every stinking seam, to quote Cindy Needham) and then determine whether the quilt needed more quilting. If so, I think I would stick to straight line stitching, either using black or matching the thread to the patches being quilted. Normally I would try to introduce curved lines to offset the strong lines of the design, but in this case I think more straight lines would be ideal.

I agree---no white thread! I would also use black thread, SID on every seam. Then I would go back and matchstick straight lines 1/4" apart on all the black parts only. No quilting on the colors for me. Very pretty!

Invisible thread is more difficult to work with than 100% cotton thread. Learned that the hard way, of course. If you pressed your seams to one side, a 50wt 100% cotton (I love Aurifil brand, but if you're looking to save money, 100% cotton Gutermann will work okay; Aurifil blends in more with the fabric because it has 2 strands instead of the standard 3) thread in black would hide your quilting the best with SITD.

That sashing -- with a black thread -- would also be a great place to practice free motion quilting. The only way to learn new skills is to start doing them. I think stained glass quilts are the ideal quilt for trying out different types of free motion stitches, but that's up to you. I think a pale yellow could look really nice, or you could use an invisible thread for that. It won't show up that much, so you could make plenty of mistakes & most people would never notice. The downside with the invisible thread I've found is with unsewing; I need to go one size up on my needles & on top of that I struggle a bit more with picking it out. But maybe that was just the brand I chose. I don't know. Just make sure not to put invisible thread in the bobbin (learned that the hard way, too).

I think the piecing is so strong on its own - I think stitch in the ditch with black thread along all the black pieces would be perfect.

Sometimes less is better! (IMO, of course.)

DOTTYMO 09-22-2015 10:34 PM

I did stitch in the ditch on all black sashing even in the blocks. It kept it looking like a stain glass window.

I think we both took the same Craftsy class, In my sleep - "every stinking seam" :-)

I would also stitch in the ditch with black thread on each side of the black fabric. That should be enough quilting for this wall hanging. Very pretty: looks like stain glass.

I'll be watching to see what you decide to do on this lovely quilt. I love stained-glass type blocks and yours look great. Post again when you have finished quilting it. I would keep my thread black also, not white or yellow.

I recently saw a quilt which had FMQ but with a design looking like mountain peaks staggered at the peak and with a thread the same color as the fabric but a different shade lighter or darker. I think it would look nice on this quilt if you think it needs more quilting. (which I think it does from the picture. Don't go over the black, just inside each segment. I do have pictures on my cell phone and wil try to post if you would be interested)

Yes would like to see them.
Thanks

I won't offer any more advice on the quilting - all the previous threads have given you lots of ideas I'm sure - just wanted to say for a 'newbie' quilter that is one very good quilt - love your colour choices a very big well done.

klswift 09-24-2015 07:44 AM

Because it is so angular, I would probably do a wavy pattern thru the sashing. Then a decorative stitch thru the black areas within each block. I would probably use black thread, but if the backing is solid black, I might use something a bit different in the bobbin. Nice looking - for a beginner, you did a great job. I love to start my students on this type of quilt - maximum impact with minimum matching!!!!

FiveseveN 09-24-2015 09:40 AM

I agree with SITD on the sashing, and along all the black lines.

Then I would either leave it if I looks done or use a variegated thread similar to the colors randomly in the colors. Nothing too heavy, but different in each to give the fabric more of a glass look, simulating the pigment swirls in many stained glass pieces.

Quilt30 09-24-2015 01:05 PM

In the ditch only. I don't believe it needs any more quilting. The shape and colors are the design. If any more quilting, then perhaps 1/4" inside the sashing strips between blocks but not the black strips in each block.

sewNso 09-25-2015 05:44 AM

I did one a lot like that, and it was a quilt as you go pattern....

I agree. Simple and effective.

Thanks every one.
I have learned so much on this site from all the members .

I wouldn't use white. This is beautiful piecing work, and if you use white, that's all you'll see, I think.

I agree, use black, a decorative stitch in the sashing. I'd stitch in the ditch in the squares but only because that's about all I can do, not having FMQ experience or skills. Others have good ideas about what to do in the squares.

sewmuch 09-25-2015 08:28 AM

Very pretty. I made a king quilt in stained glass pattern and had it quilted w/a meandering stitch in black. Didn't take away from the design....

wishfulthinking 09-25-2015 09:25 AM

I agree with SITD with black thread on all the black parts. Then I think maybe just a small meander in the colored sections with a coordinated thread. Lovely little piece & look like you did a great job! Good luck with your quilting!

jeanne49 09-25-2015 09:50 AM

Definitely no white thread. Don't know if you've ever used invisible thread, but I've used it twice and will never use it again. Stitch in the ditch around all the sashing and the borders with black thread. I've been using the decorative stitches on my machine quite a lot lately. Either use black or a bright colored varigated thread to sew decorative stitches on the black areas.
