This is wonderful but before you do anything ensure that her parents are okay with this plan.

I began sewing on a machine at age 6. I would suggest teaching her to do some hand sewing and join the pieces together with needle and thread. I taught my granddaughter to iron at age 8. But I would hesitate to start a 5 year old with an iron.
