HST border
newish quilter here. Getting ready to add the last border it's 2.5" square HST with 2.5" squares in between. I'm thinking it would be better to add a 1.5 inch in the dark then the HSTborder then another 1.5 inch border in the same dark. Just doesn't feel right to have the last border pieced?
Thanks for any help geraldine |
Could you post a pic?

The last boarder would be fine pieced. It would look great.

I've seen (and done) lots of pieced borders. However, if it doesn't feel right to you then maybe you need to go with your intuition.

It's fine to piece the last border, but if you don't like it that way then your plan will work too. If you do piece the last border, it would be best to put a line of stay stitching around the edge so that it doesn't stretch while you're sandwiching it. Also be aware that after you sew the first inner border your quilt dimensions will change, so the number of HST's and plain squares going around it will be affected, and it will also be harder to match those blocks to the blocks in the quilt, if that's a consideration.

My opinion...as long as your HST's are not finished on the bias, you should be fine with a pieced border. Depending on the method you used to do your HST's you may want to use a plain finishing border. Make it easier to quilt that way.

I love pieced borders! When you are done, just run a row of stay stitching about 1/8" from the edge to keep the seams from popping when handling it to quilt. It's your quilt, however, and if you don't like the look, then substitute!

Its fine to have a pieced border. What you might want to do is stitch along the outside edge to keep the seams from coming undone. I just finished a checkerboard border using scraps and that's what I did to keep it from unraveling on me. Helps when you go to quilt it too, won't stretch as much.

When I've finished with a HST border, I've added a strip of fabric along the edges so I can trim it off after I'm done quilting. It's not a border, just a stabilizing strip so I don't have to trim off points after the quilting. Maybe I have issues...but it's worked for me!
