HST Quilt construction

1 Attachment(s)
I am free styling a HST quilt as mocked up in photo and would like your advise!
1) Best seam ironing tips?
2) When constructing the quilt, I don’t think I want to construct in rows, what do you think about doing blocks, like 4x4 or 5x5?
i appreciate your thoughts!

I prefer sewing tops together in blocks, instead of rows, I feel like I can keep things straighter/more lined up and for some reason it seems to go faster for me (a mental illusion, I know, but...). It all comes out the same in the end, so whatever works for you!
Not sure about seam pressing, it may matter much in that layout, since there aren't a lot of points coming together. will look forward to hearing what others say though.

I have done a similar quilt & sewed it in 4 quarters & then sewed those together. Went together easily.

LAF2019, ctrysass2012, thank you for the input! It’s nice to bounce these things off others. Thanks!

I press all my seems open. Makes for a much flatter block and no worries about opposites needing to nest.

I put blocks together in quadrants. They can be squared up again before the final seams. It is an easier way to get a quilt together as you are working in smaller sections.

I think it would be best to press the seams open and this will be less bulk. Especially since there are so many triangles going together.

I don't like sewing in rows there is more chance of stretching one end or the other. Sewing in 6, 10 or 12" blocks is my prefer method. I always lay my seams to the lighter side so they don't shadow through. They will lay good this way too. Are you making it a square or bringing it out to be longer than wider?

I press those seams open. The default on my machine is for a 2.5 stitch and I drop the stitch down to 2.0 when pressing seams open. If you set the seam, as you normally would before pressing, it makes the seams open easier. And I have found, for me at least, when opening seams, if I put the darker side of the fabric to the top it is easier to find the lip of fabric and open. That sounds more confusing that it is in reality:-)

The last time I made a quilt with a lot of HST, which actually I seem to do often. Anyway I have always pressed my seams open that is what I was taught to do.
