Hunter Star?
I am taking a class on the Hunter Star in a couple of weeks. I have been told to purchase two yards each of two contrasting colors. I have to do all the cutting before the class. Has anyone done one of these. Is your two colors like one dark and one white? What about baticks? Can you use a print. I'm just need some input.
|
Go to google images and type in hunter star quilt and many pics will come up. I saw prints, batiks and solids. Most used dark and lights. Hopes this helps.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Search for images on the web. There are lots out there. The Hunter Star is a favorite of mine but I have never made it.

Meant to say three color! Osewme, it is easy using Deb Tucker ruler and directions.

I used a blue/green batik mix that had a lot of "movement" and differences in it as a dark and a very light green batik as the light.
|
quiltnNan I love that quilt! The colors are beautiful.
luvspaper, that's so pretty. I like the unique border. |
Here are some color selection using two colors. Just bring exactly what is on the class list and follow her instructions.

jinny Beyer has a few different ways of doing Hunter's Star.
|
I use to paper piece the block now I use the Hunter's Star die for the Go. Wow talk about easier! I love Hunter Star block quilts. They are beautiful no matter what colors are used.
|
Love it, and love the borders.
|
My first one was apple green and turquoise blue. My second one was white and teal. I think any combo of colors would work as long as there is some contrast. For instance, I don't think a medium green and a dark green would work very well.
|
Me, too! I can't believe how easy the Hunter's Star pattern is using the GO to cut out the pieces.

I made one that was dark blue and light blue.

I would definitely buy Debbie tucker hunter star ruler....
|
I just took this class about a week ago. We made a 4 block (16 squares) table topper with added borders to get the dimension we wanted. Deb Tuckers ruler and method is by far the EASIEST block I have EVER made. It consists of some trapezoids (easy peasy with ruler) and 2 different size strips WOF. I did the 2 color one (but you can easily use 3 or 4 different fabrics with stunning results) using a beige/beige tonal as my light then a burgundy with beige small stars. Turned out beautiful. Do yourself a favor and spend the $$ for the ruler/directions. I checked on line for the BEST price but with tax and shipping it was better to buy at my LQS. have a blast in your class.... I plan on making several more lap size. (cause I want to - plus justify the price of the ruler lol ! I would post a picture but still not sure how to from I phone !! sigh ..........

I have made several Hunter Stars and STRONG word of advice. My first one - all my fabrics were all naturals in creams and tans. The quilt turned out beautiful but you couldn't see the pattern. I was very disappointed but the one I made it for loved it. My next ones were red white and blue (made QOV's) and they turned out beautiful. Use darks and lights!!! Don't use medium shades that blend. To see the pattern you really need the contrast.

Are you ladies using the petite or the large ruler when you are making a bed quilt size? I am not sure what size to order..... does the 8" on the ruler mean an 8" square which is the entire design or 8" block, where 4 of them make up one star design? (?Does this make any sense to anyone??)
|
I bought the Petite one. The largest square you can make with it is 8 1/2" unfinished. You need 4 of these squares to make ONE BLOCK which would measure 16" FINISHED. I don't want to make blocks any bigger than 16" finished as I generally make lap quilts. I agree with above about using light and dark fabrics for a dramatic look. I liked this method as there are NO "Y" seams and NO HST. Hope this helps!

I made this one with the half square triangle method cut with my Go cutter. It was fun.

We are required to buy the ruler for the class and were told to pick two contrasting colors. One dark and one light, no neutrals. I'm leaning toward baticks. Not sure yet. I just looked at the cutting directions. Looks easy. I'm thinking I probably don't need a class to do this, but I'm committed now. I'll post a picture when I'm done. Thanks for all the input.

I have made a couple of Hunter Star Quilts. They were both queen size. They took much more fabric than I expected. If she is asking for only 2 yards of each fabric, I think it will be a lap size. If you want yours larger, you will need more yardage.

I have made a couple of Hunter Star Quilts. They were both queen size. The first was using Deb Tucker's ruler and the 2nd was paper pieced. I chose paper piecing because I wanted it scrappy and thought that would give me results I wanted easier. Deb Tucker's rulers are the way to go imho. Booth took much more fabric than I expected. If she is asking for only 2 yards of each fabric, I think it will be a lap size. If you want yours larger, you will need more yardage.
Sorry for the double post. I went to edit the post and my computer is having problems and haven't found a fix for it. |

Love Hunter Star, Deb Tucker's rulers are fantastic. Light and dark work for me. Your colors are perfect! The red is absolutely inspiring. So many patterns and the days go by too fast.
|
I did 2 up and used the Deb Tucker ruler for the second one. It was so much easier I think.

This is mine, in multi colours. Christmas table runner.

You don't have to use white and a color, you just need to be sure there is definite contrast between your light and your medium to dark fabric.
