I am in need of some advice. My DH wanted a quilt for his chair so i made a bow tie quilt. He said he wanted it tied and not quilted. Well it is tied and now he is not liking all the 'white worms' all over the quilt.
I used a soft white yarn. What do you all use to tie your quilts with? Has anyone tied on their machine?
Thanks for your help.

I tied my first one yesterday and I have a new appreciation for the lost art of tying. It was a duplicated quilt that my deceased MIL made in '72. I do not think you could ever do one with a machine but what I did with mine was to SITD and then tie the rows.

I like the look to be honest with you but after I duplicate the original 3 times I do not think I will tie one again.

Post a few photos of your quilt, I am sure that there are a few folks here that can help you in making your hubby happy!!

I use a double strand of cotton crochet thread No. 5

You can also bar tack with your sewing machine instead of tying. It makes for a softer look and you don't have those tails to worry about.

I have tied with embroidery thread using all three strands, clipping fairly short. The thread will fray out and kind of curl up so you won't get the worms.

I use DMC embroidery thread, tie a surgeons knot, cut short, but only on doll quilts so far no large quilts.

I've used perle cotton to tie quilts but you could use button hole thread or any coarse thread that wouldn't look cutesy to DH.

I use embroidery floss or crochet thread. My big elna has a lock stitch where I could "tie" on it, but I don't like the big knot on the backing.

Search "turkey tracks" in the Search Box above. One of the members did a tutorial on how to tie quilts this way. I have done a couple and I love how it looks and it finishes flat (you don't have a know anywhere). Check it out and let us know if you do it and how your hubby liked it.

I use embroidery floss. I personally don't like the look of yarn. I usually use 3 strands.

AnnaK 03-04-2010 09:40 PM

My note on Turkey Tracks should say, it doesn't leave a KNOT.

Thanks for the help everyone. The Turkey Tracks looks like the way I'll go.

I use dmc thread

I've tied many, many quilts over the years. All my charity quilts have been/are tied. My children's quilts are tied too. No point in going to all that work to hand quilt it when it's going to have a rough life anyway.

I use either a thicker crochet thread or embroidery floss. They both turn out nicely.

Or you can use one repeat of a pretty decorative stitch!

I also use 3 strands of embroidery floss. I like the softer look rather than yarn.

I would take a permanent marker in the color of his choice and mark those little white worms. Of course, he can help. Good Luck.

Depending on the quilt collors, sometimes I use embroidery floss, makes a nice firm knot and is much harder to see than yarn. Colored crochet thread is also a good thing to use. Have fun, Gail

Would it help if the knots and tails were on the back side of the quilt so they would not show on the front? Also, you could use thead of what ever type you choose in colors to match the areas that have the ties.

thanks for all your help. i removed the yarn and am starting over

Marcia 03-06-2010 08:01 PM

I use DMC floss--three strands

Dorothy of Kansas 03-06-2010 08:08 PM

I use embroidery floss, but use all six strands and a curved needle. Also use the surgeon's knot, which is a square knot, wrapped twice and tied. I tend to cut mine very short, so they aren't noticeable. It's all a personal choice, so try out different ways and see which one you like. Good luck!!

I tied my first with DMC thread for cross stichting.

You may want to re-tie the quilt - from the back. The threads will be on the reverse side instead and keep the front neat. Also, use thread that matches the colors of the quilt. Good luck!

What is bar tacking? I've never heard of it. How is it done?

tooMuchFabric 03-07-2010 11:57 PM

Tie your quilt using whatever strand or fiber you like, leaving at least an inch or so of tails.
Then, with a needle with an eye appropriate for your strand, thread the tails and hide them right back down into the layers of your quilt, and you'll only see the knot, not the tails.
Also makes it harder for knots to come undone if the long tails are still there, hidden within your quilt layers.

I have used crochet thread. it is heavy and works great.
