Husqvarna serger model 910
 

Does anyone have one of these? I just bought one, the guy says it was his mother's and has been in their closet for 8 years, since his mother passed away. It looks like a brand new machine, I don't believe it has ever been unpacked since it was bought. The problem is the hand wheel will not turn, it's stuck very firmly, so the machine just makes a humming sound when you step on the pedal. Can anyone help or give some advice? Thanks, Sharon

I've taken apart old sewing machines to oil and lubricate, but never a serger. It's possible that it simply needs cleaning and oil or new lubricant; oiled parts can stiffen up when not used for so many years. If you want to try, the first step is to figure out how to get the top cover off. If you can do that, you can oil the part that appears stuck. It can take quite awhile for the oil to penetrate, so you may have to do that repeatedly. If there is gunked up oil in there, you may need to use some kind of cleaner to remove the gunked up oil. Sorry this is very unscientific! If you can find websites that detail how to free up the handwheel on a sewing machine, the same information should apply to a serger.

It would probably be a good idea for you to join a group such as wefixit on groups.yahoo.com to get better technical advice. A husqvarna sewing machine group could be helpful too. A lot of time there are technicians on these groups who can provide you with basic information.

If it were me, I would take it to my LQS and have a tune up done on it. That way, you will know what is wrong with it and they can fix it. For a sewing machine, they charge $79 to do a tune up so it is probably cheaper with a serger. Good luck!

Thank you for your replies. I called a couple of different repair places this morning and they both said exactly the same thing. It sat up too long unused and the oil and grease have turned to glue. What a shame, this beautiful machiine has never been used. But I think I can get it cleaned and adjusted and reoiled for about $100 so I'm going for it. Can't play with my new toy this weekend, but next weekend, watch out!
