Wondered if anyone has or has had this machine and if so, what do/did you think of it? If you had one, why did you get rid of it? It looks like it would do all I want it to do. It is mechanical not computerized and this is what I am looking for at the moment. Thanks if you can help with info.

I had a 6340 and took it to a local serviceman -- he had no clue and apparently did not want to bother learning -- he suggested I scrap it -- it was over 40 years old and I could not find anyplace in Kentucky to get it serviced. Result -- I let him scrap it, but kept all the cams, attachments and booklets.

Found a Yahoo Group that guides you through working on it yourself. Result -- I have since bought two vintage vikings off of e-bay. I loved that machine. Had I known in 2009, what I know now, it would never have been scrapped. On the upside, I did purchase my 301a from that serviceman to replace it, and I love that machine as well, and will work on it myself thanks to another Yahoo Group on Vintage Singers.

I had the 6440 way back when. I did have some issues with the stacks or cams as some people called them. The place on the back of the machine to put the stack in kept breaking. It was made of plastic and for some reason didn't like the stacks being changed out. Hope this helps you?

Aurora & Suzy, Thanks for all the good information. Sounds like this machine has good points and bad .... just like everything else in life! I will have to think about whether this is what I want to buy or look for something else.

I've had mine for 30+ years and love it, love it, love it! Had it serviced twice in that time. Most recent issue is that some prongs have broken off the back of some of the cams - not a big deal since I don't really use the decorative stitches-but can't buy new ones other than on ebay. It is truly a workhorse. What are they asking for it and is it in good working order?

I have one that I bought on Craigslist about 3-4 years ago. It's a workhorse! Nothing fancy, although I do use the embroidery cams sometimes. I like it for piecing because it has no problem stitching over multiple layers of fabric. I paid $125 for it, but then had to get $200 worth of work done- $90 for cleaning and lubing, and the rest to replace parts. The maintenance guy told me the parts are pretty easy to get.

swanne, I was watching one on ebay that looked and sounded nice. But, alas, the auction was over before I got any comments to my post so I was hesitant to bid. It went for around $150 plus s/h but there was another like it that went for $400 plus with added s/h. Maybe it had some gold on it for that price??? Looked the same to me! Ebay is certainly a strange "animal", don't you think? Sounds like I should still lookout for one since it is a workhorse as you say. Thanks!

sharoney, Sounds like you agree with the "workhorse" label for this machine. Now, of course, I wish I had bid on the one I was watching. Not that I need another machine but there was something about this one and the 6460 that just called my name. Well, I will keep a watch out for these. Thanks!

There is one on ebay right now - ends in 5 days. Bid is at $66 and is apparently in good working order. good luck!
