I am beginning to get the hang of this bargello pattern...border suggestions?

Okay, I am 3/4 done with my Surf Song bargello pattern. Several of you keep saying to send pictures as I am going, so here is where I am now.

I have 3/4 of this top center section done, and I am starting to think of borders. I like borders, and I bought enough of the dark purple for that to be the outer border. Not sure of which fabric to have as an inner border.

Suggestions? I know I will audition various fabrics, but would like your thoughts.

Thanks.

Dina

Hmmmm, I am not really sure, have you asked your inspector in the chair???LOL Love your bargello!!!!

mom-6 12-15-2013 09:25 AM

I think I would go for a lightish medium blue for the inner border. Not the very light blues.

dakotamaid 12-15-2013 09:26 AM

Not sure about the border but since this is on my bucket list I'm following along here. Your colors are beautiful!!

katier825 12-15-2013 09:28 AM

Its beautiful! I've always loved the single color border split with a flange like this,

I really like Katie's suggestion. I also like the look of having a white inner border, so the bargello seems to float. You are definitely "getting the hang of it" - your bargello is marvelous.

bigsister63 12-15-2013 09:37 AM

IMHO- I would make a small 1' inner border of the dark pirple in the top and then make the outer border a medium purple such as you have on the chair in the 1st pic or a med blue since the pattern is "Surf" As I always ask- What color do you want this quilt to be"

Dina 12-15-2013 10:01 AM

Really good suggestions. Thank you. I will audition all of them....after I get the next 1/4 done, of course. :)

No great border ideas, but I want to say your quilt is awesome!

ManiacQuilter2 12-15-2013 01:26 PM

Usually a darker fabric works best for framing the quilt. Maybe do an inside accent border with the lighter opposite color or your outside border. OK, in other words, try a light lavender for an inside border with the outer border being a dark blue. The bargello is looking real good!!

DINA, your cat seems to be intensely looking at the quilt. What is it's opinion ????

DOTTYMO 12-15-2013 01:30 PM

I thought one colour then looked saw white although not as a complete border then my brain switched off.

charsuewilson 12-15-2013 02:07 PM

I would do just the purple, but a white inner border would look good too.

Ha! Yes, my quilt inspector, Hot Rod, always has an opinion. His opinion is that every quilt is his!! :) He carefully watches my progress, and then whenI lay the quilt on the floor for a picture, he hops in the middle of it, claiming it as his.

It's lovely, Dina. I think Hot Rod agrees.

I have to tell you that if I can do it, anyone can. I promise. It is not a quick process, but it is very do-able.

Beautiful quilt. I went through the Bargello albums on the website and I am really drawn to a frame. I like the quilts that use an inner border, then continue the pattern in the next border and then repeat the inner border color as the binding.

Jackie Spencer 12-15-2013 07:29 PM

Beautiful!! I am really enjoying watching your progress on this. Thank you so much for posting!

sushi 12-15-2013 08:04 PM

I agree with Maniacquilter2 (if I'm remembering the name correctly). On almost every quilt, I like a thin inner border of the light-color fabric and then a wider outer border of a dark-color fabric. To me, this makes the most pleasing frame.

That said, I wouldn't do anything that would distract from the gorgeous Bargello work you've done!!!

LOL I'm sure your inspector will help you with this!

Cornishlass 12-16-2013 04:16 AM

I, too, am in awe of this quilt and whilst I am still very much a beginner as far as fabric choices are concerned I would go along with maniacquilter2's suggestion. The colours are fantastic and I can't wait to see it progress.

Beautiful & I think your inspector is fascinated.

I lie a dark color as a small inner border, that seems to STOP the design and then pull one of the other colors from the body of the top for the outer border (not too light).

quiltmom04 12-17-2013 05:23 AM

Very beautiful colors! Very soothing! I have done several bargellos and this is what I have found works best for me. Add a small (about an inch or inch and a half) border to 'stop the motion' of the Bargello. I generally use a dark fabric, but not one that is in the quilt or that color will 'leak' into the border. After you have that visual separation, you can audition other fabrics. In some bargellos, I've used a fabric from the quilt, and since you have that breaking border, the color won't overwhelm the quilt. I've also used more pattern and designs in the border that complement the inner bargello pattern. But, even in a regular quilt, I often choose the border after it's done, so if you don't have fabric yet, take your quilt to the fabric store and see what you like.. It will be lovely !

I've made 2 bargello wallhangings. This one is my favorite. I found a beautiful batik print that combined the colors of the bargello. I used a deep purple 1/2" finished width border to frame the bargello, then my batik print border, then bound it w/the same deep purple.

Very nice! I am in the "thinking" stages of a bargello too - haven't mustered up the courage yet though!

Dina 12-17-2013 07:32 AM

Beautiful quilt, Dollyo!!! Hope mine turns out at least half as good. I am currently working on Christmas cards, then I can quilt. :)

carolynjo 12-17-2013 07:50 AM

Definitely, you have the "hang of it" and the quilt is beautiful. Post again when you finish.

Mariposa 12-17-2013 07:58 AM

Perhaps do a light/med. blue inner border, followed by a wider dark purple one.............
Your bargello is sew pretty!!

IBQUILTIN 12-17-2013 10:13 AM

You are doing a great job on it and I'll bet when you get it to size, the border colors will speak to you. Its going to be so lovely

MargeD 12-17-2013 10:29 AM

You could let your quilt inspector help, however I will say that I love your quilt, absolutely gorgeous. My first reaction is the second darkest blue with the darkest purple, but there are so many combinations.

Dina 12-17-2013 02:06 PM

Thanks again for all the great suggestions. I will finish the center of this quilt today and start auditioning borders tomorrow. :)

I made Surf Song last year and did not add a border. I took the almost completed top to several quilters and asked what they thought, and even though it's our nature to add borders, I accepted the majority decision not to add a border. I so totally love it.

I understand. My son doesn't think I should add a border, and when I look at other bargello quilts online, they don't have borders. I really prefer borders, but I will go with what looks best ...if I get that far today.

Thanks for your input. I am going to love this quilt, which is rare for me. Usually I don't know if I will like a quilt until I am finished. Nice feeling to know already. This is the wall hanging size. Wonder if I could get myself ready to make a larger one....hmmmm.

Your quilt is beautiful. I loved making this one.

Buckeye Rose 12-18-2013 08:58 PM

I didn't put a border on mine as DD decided against one.....but....I like the idea of a border on that pattern....kind of like a frame for art.....I would use one of the lighter colors for the inner border, then one of the darkest for the outer....but that is just me and my honest opinion.....You did great on the fabric selections and it is coming together great!

Okay, I have finished the last 1/4 of my bargello and have made a border decision. It was fun deciding what look I really wanted, and here is what I just decided. The borders aren't sewn on yet, so visualize each 1/2 inch skinnier when all is said and done.

Thanks for all your suggestions. This whole process has been fun, especially with all the help I got from lots of you quilters!! :)

amyjo 12-19-2013 01:56 PM

Really like it. Your colors are very pretty together. I am thinking I might have to add one to my to do list.
