The old simple machines are the best they have fewer parts -no computer chips and you don' t have to pay NASA to fix them As to deals at the 2nd hand shops there are more misses than hits So don't give up listen to that inner voice when out running errands I think I enjoy the hunt as much as the scores

It will happen when you least expect it or when you are short on $$. That's my luck, anyway. :) :)

My machine is simple and I don't have anything fancy; would love a longarm. I live vicariously through all of you!

Our daughter did her 4-H sewing on an old black head Singer that belonged to her great-grandmother and the judges would always want to know what brand of machine she had because her stitches were so straight. She still likes that machine, even thaough she has a newer one that has lots of options. The older machines are wonderful and 98% of the sewing we do is straight stitch. I like my old singer, too, for a lot of things, and I have a new, top of the line.

I have found great buys posted from our local quilds. I've told my family to call my guild to sell all my equipment when I go. Try estate sales in you area. Check the local machine stores for tradeins.

I do not have luck just walking around looking at garage sales. When I do not see a sewing machine I ask if they ave any old sewing machines. They some times go digging and come up with some type of machine. Asking is the only way I have found machines at garage sales that I have purchased.

I would never had known that this little old lady was getting rid of her stash unless I had asked. They don't advertise it normally

Just recently, reading about all the great finds by members of this board, I told my men that, for Mother's Day, they could get this old machine out of the storage shed for me so I could take a good look at it. They did, and I fell in love with the drawer pulls all over again along with the machine itself. It's an old New Home treadle that had pounds of dust and dirt on it. That was my project for Mother's Day!! DH re-attached parts of the cabinet that had fallen off and I washed and scraped and oiled and dusted. It looks pretty good for maybe a hundred years old. And I named her "Cora" after the lady I bought it from. Next is to clean up the throat plate,figure out the thread sequence and put a needle in it. Everyting seems to move easily and smoothly. so we will see. I have had the greatest Mother's Day ever!!! |
