Just out of curiosity, when are you most inspired or eager to create?

For me it is about an hour after I get up in the mornings (which is when I am leaving for work!! ), and right before I go to sleep at night... which is just as frustrating!! At these times I want to call in sick or stay up all night (then call in sick  ) just so I can sew!! Alas, I am a responsible person, so I do what I am supposed to do, & pray for rain on Saturdays!!!

I hear about people who wake up in the middle of the night to sew  and others who can only sew on pretty days. So, I was just curious about the members here.

I am most inspired when I get home from work. I've had all day to think about fabric and quilt blocks and ways to do things, and I can't wait to get started. Unfortunately, my hubby has this thing about eating supper, so quilting must wait til after supper and on weekends.

Usually, I'm the most inspired when I have lots of housework to do and the baby won't take a nap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flying_V_Goddess 04-10-2007 03:08 PM

Usually when I have read through a couple of quilting magazines or whenever I see a design in a game that would make a good quilt design or see a quilt in a movie (I went to go see Saw III with my boyfriend and I went "Oh, I want to make that!" after briefy seeing the quilt on the bed the one guy was sitting on...how in the world can you get inspired to make a quilt while watching a horror movie?!).

SandraJennings 04-10-2007 05:29 PM

Couldn't help but laugh at that one! Horror movie indeed! I have had people aghast with horror when I show them what I am going to have to do to quilt a project. Go figure! It is such a sight to see them running away with their arms all waving about and glassy eyed! Hearing the words faintly coming back at me over their shoulders....." I.. just ... don't.... get... it WHY do you do that????" Meanwhile I gleefully rubbed my hands together and pounce upon the piles of fabric. Sighs and strange groans emerging in the process before me. And when finally finished......like some Frankenstein of old ....I cry..."It is finished!!!" Hee-Hee

I am most inspired when I have a really bad week at school and have so much homework..then I want to just sit and sew sew sew, but unfortuneately, I can't! Just this evening I finally made my April BOM when I really should have been getting a portfolio ready for class and other stuff. Ha...but I feel so much more relaxed and happy after sewing. Ask me how I feel after homework...  I think I could have the most difficult time sewing something and getting the measurements wrong and have to rip it out a couple of times and resew it and still enjoy it more than any assignment..actually, I know I would! Usually, I get MOST inspired when it is late at night and I should be sleeping and I can't because when I lay down to go to sleep I have all of these ideas running through my head for my next project.

SandraJennings 04-11-2007 10:53 AM

Just realized I didn't say what inspired me most.....that is hard because I seem to run into inspirational ideas everywhere... the trouble is putting them down for a future project. That and getting back to the long list of inspirational notes...aahhhhh.....gotta love it!

imaquilter 04-11-2007 06:29 PM

after helping out in my local quilt shop for a day! I want to buy everything in the shop and wind up coming home motivated to work on my projects after helping other quilters with their creations all day!

Extreme Quilter 04-12-2007 04:04 AM

I'm inspired most when I watch a TV quilt program's featured project that I just have to make.

ceannastahr 04-12-2007 06:56 AM

I see quilt possibilites everywhere just don't have the talent for some I have invisioned or the time I would have to live to about 500. I see alot in my sleep and write them down as soon as I wake up so I won't forget

vicki reno 04-17-2007 10:17 AM

I am most inspired after being at work all day with my fingers just itching to get home and sew, but like others, it just ain't gonna happen like that. Supper and laundry and work and ugh, housework, and yard work, and on and on. sometimes, I jsut say phooey on it and sew all weekend. Then come Monday, everything I should have done is staring at me after work. I need to win the lottery, retire, move to the mtns, and hire a maid. Now that would definitely inspire me

Catherine 04-17-2007 11:01 AM

What a good question, everyone has something to say about this one.
I am most inspired during the day. While I'm sitting at the computer working and answering the phone, keeping the business running.....I start to day dream..... about my next project. Quilting magazines always help jump start the desire to sew a new quilt. Todays world keeps our minds so full of other things that it is hard to find a space in our cerebral corner to retain info on a new idea! well, only if your 50, I suppose. You younger ones, still have plenty of storage!!!

Carla P 04-17-2007 03:04 PM

Vicki, do not dismay; about once a month I try to do the exact same thing!! (It takes me a month to get cought back up so I can "skip chores" again!!)

Catherine, I can't speak for anyone else under 50, or anyone over 50 for that matter  , but speaking for myself, I can assure you I am at the point of "if something new goes in, something old is going to fall out!!" (usually what is left of my brain matter).

Catherine 04-17-2007 03:54 PM

Quilters keep their right frontal part of their brain intact, most of the time,, this is where everyones creativity is. (at least that is what my son's brain surgeon said,) I make sure that when I dump info, it is somewhere else in my brain..like listening to my husband telling me something about blah blah blah......what was that???? ha

Carla P 04-18-2007 08:29 AM

   You too????

sarah333 06-19-2007 06:10 PM

you ladies inspire me when i see what ya'll do .i think to my self wow i can do that to. and of course i don't .but it makes me move on what i'm working on that moment. thanks tia sarah

Jill 06-19-2007 07:47 PM

I am most inspired early in the morning. My husband leaves for work at 6:30 and sometimes I practically run upstairs to my sewing room to get started. I don't turn on music or TV, I stitch in complete silence. During the winter it was so wonderful to see the sun come up while working at something I love. Sometimes when I see all the cars driving by of people going to work I feel guilty that I earned such a wonderful retirement. Don't worry, I don't feel guilty very long.

Skip Chores? The heck with chores.

You are young. You will learn. Life is too short not to indulge in your passion.

Trust me.

Carla P 06-20-2007 07:53 AM

vicki reno 06-20-2007 08:33 AM

love your reasoning!

cdub 06-20-2007 08:58 AM

Probably pretty typical, but I'm most inspired by shopping, especially online. So many choices of fabrics and batting and notions and patterns and whatnot, and I'm not limited to what local stores carry!

I have a really good time shopping on eBay for fabric squares. Some of the color and print combinations are inspiring, and it's nice to have those first steps done for me (washing, pressing, cutting).

And I'm one of those night people, I guess? My favorite time to start any craft work is after dinner when the kitchen is cleaned up, when I feel "off duty". I can sew or knit long into the night, and at my best between 1am and 3am. But boy oh boy am I dragging my heiny the following morning! Anyone else a night person?

Blessings
Crystal

ps Great great crazy quilt! What a wonderful gift!

I'm most inspired early Satuday or Sunday mornings - especially after a long work week. I get up, shower while coffee's brewing. After getting dressed, I pop my ipod into external speakers and sip coffee while playing with my fabric. Just looking and feeling the fabric gets me motivated to either finish a project or start a new one.

Here is one of my latest inspirations.

Knot Sew 06-20-2007 11:05 AM

Is that a patchwork jacket? I love it......HOW? HOW? and Sarah I love your crazy quilt......I hope you put your name on it. It is one of a kind, not a copy of others, I love your originality.
As far as inspiration, I'm not orginal, buying fabric , or a magizine, or a quilt show.

bj9patch 06-20-2007 11:18 AM

Yes. it's a patchwork jacket, machined quilted and I couched metallic yarn on top.

Here is the pattern I used.

I was a pm (3-11) nurse for many years & worked my share of nights (11-7) too. Then I worked days for many years after that. Now that I'm retired I find myself falling back into my pm persona - I get a second wind after supper & can sew or read into the wee hours of morning. Or just sit on the deck in the dark watching the stars. I guess everyone has their own internal rhythm & that must be mine. I makemyself get up at 7:30 though no matter what. It is soooo awesome being retired!

bj9patch 06-20-2007 11:40 AM

I am looking forward to the day I retire. I am truly a morning person! Sometimes I'm a little late for work because I start playing with my fabric and lose track of time then have to run for the train. Oh well, what's a girl to do. I can't help myself.

:) :?: Yes we all need inspiration and there's LOTS here. I'm going back to my Dresden Plate Quilt which I'm FMotioning Swirls and loops on the sections. I Love it . But for now I'm here and have a bit of Quilter's Block like Writer's Block sooooo don't know when I'll be back round to it. I'm new at FM but I love going forwards,Backwards ,sideways and these swirls I do are lovely and I really don't have to mark it or think about it just GO.. And Enjoy it. When am I inspired ,Never can tell Books and Nature makes me want to do an ART quilt somedays. Anything Goes these days and with quilting it can be done a gillion ways!!!!
