Pictures of embroidery blocks with vintage fabric
1 Attachment(s)
I have had a few requests for pictures of my quasi-crazy quilt project. It starts with a straight but irregular edge cut focus fabric of embroidered cotton layered on a 10" piece of muslin or other scrap. My picture shows two blocks that started with segments of a pillowcase. The fabrics that are "sewn and flipped" around the focus fabric are vintage. Some may be from feedsacks -- that I don't know, but they are old. These blocks were trimmed to 9.5", but the size is anybody's choice. I plan to set the blocks on point and will use the "quilt as you go" technique to connect them. My avatar shows a quilt made with this method.

I have two feedsacks of the green print which still are stitched together. Actually, they may be flour sacks. These sacks were in my Aunt Peggy's scraps. The solid blue-green one is a feed sack. There is a remaining logo that reads, "GlobeA-1 Laying Mash." So I know that one is a feed sack.

This is Strange! Because I to have Started a Vintage/Feedsack Quilt in just the last 4 days, I've cut 95 blocks so far! Do you think it could be a "Mind Control" on the World Web!
|
I absolutely love these........thanks so much for posting the pictures. Now I know for sure that I want to make
a quilt top like this. Appreciate it. |
here's a link to a box of a few feedsacks I have.. it was then, that i began collecting them...

Please be sure to post a pic when you complete your quasi crazy quilt. I'm anxious to see it.

LOL I have bought so much fabric from ebay that the others tease me about it all the time, but they drool a little at my good buys. Have fun with all your feed sacks.
|
Gotta love those feed sacks! I made clothes from them for 4-H projects as well as pillow cases and used the scraps for quilts. You go girl, and use them up.
|
LOL!!! Your an addict just like the rest of us!!! :) I go through spurts where I can't seem to stop buying fabric. Eventually, it will get used, if not by me, my kids. :)
|
I guess I am out of control, also. I have been ill and needed some serious surgery a month ago. I can't sit up very long at one time and was backed up with daily posts. Don't tell my husband that I missed the QB more than anything!
|
I haven't gotten into feedsacks (yet!) but love the 30's fabrics. My best friend used to hate them but as she saw them over the years when we went shopping, now loves them. I love that she is into them now but now we fight over any we see on clearance shelves!
|
Hey we all need a hobby or 2. If you come across a doggy one though you can be minus 1 and sell it to me. :) :) :)
Just try'n to help out. :) |
Love these... this is really funny though ... when my daughter was little.. I baked for extra money and used the these pretty flour sacks to make her bloomers and sun dresses... these you have are just awesome...

Hey, your addiction could be worse. I just bought my 18th sewing machine this morning. This isn't counting my 2 sergers. But, it's really not as bad as it sounds. The one this morning is a Singer 4562, that I found at a thrift store for $10 and works great. Most of the others range from $3.99 up to $40 for the highest. Actually 2 of them were free! Only about 6 are in full working order, with the rest being in various stages of disrepair (nothing too serious). But, I have them for a reason - someday I hope to have classes and teach sewing, since the schools nowadays don't seem to bother with educating the young with such valuable knowledge. Plus, I'm learning how to work on them, too. I've already figured out timing so well, that I can fix that in just a few moments on my main machine (Brother Pacesetter 1250) I find I can't resist if I see one for sale really cheap. Here's a pick of some of them...(a few machines ago, lol)
So don't feel bad, it could be worse. At least the feed sacks don't take up much room. :) Oops, I just realized I didn't count my longarm. 19th.... my bad! |

Here the latest feed sacks I've added to my ever growing collection. It's like Christmas when I go to the mailbox. :)
|
I love the 30's, 40' and 50's fabric!!! Love love love them! Ok, I really pretty much love them all!
|
Some ladies have started up a group for fabricholics, but they do not stay long. They find that one fabric that they have to have. Sorry there is no help, we are all in the same boat.

More of my pretties. Now I'm wondering if I can bring myself to cut them into pieces for my quilt. LOL!!
|
You have some beautiful pieces! I just recently got the feedsack bug too...love them. Do you mind me asking on average what you are paying for a sack? I guess I am just trying to figure out what is a good price for them, etc.
Thanks! |

Kim thanks for your help. I can't imagine what the original feedsack owners would think of us spending $18 on one bag just for the fabric!(and $100 for one bag, wow!) I have a feeling it is going to take me longer than I thought to collect the fabric because of cost...but it will totally be worth it! I think I am just going to do a small scrappy quilt any ideas where to buy smaller pieces other than eBay, etsy?
I need to do a little research, I'm not sure why some sacks go for so much more than others. Thanks again! |

I need to do a little research, I'm not sure why some sacks go for so much more than others. Thanks again! I remember seeing on Ebay where some people had scraps of feedsacks they were selling. Take a look at this this one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Premium-Lot-...item5ae4f8d1d8 I type "Vintage Feed Sacks" in the search bar and spend a few hours drooling. :) I think I'm going to do 4" or 5" squares and tie it instead of quilting it. |
Thanks for the link. You will definitely have to share when you finish your quilt, I'm sure it will be beautiful!
I am so sad...wanting to cry! I saw a beautiful grandma's garden quilt top on etsy that was just listed today. In GREAT condition, beautiful feedsack prints- bright and colorful...I absolutely loved it. I had it in my cart...planned to buy it...but thought I should think about it, and got busy with my 4 kids. My 6 week old was fussy, didn't get to go back until a few hours later, and it's GONE...gone. Sorry to complain, but it was only $55 and like I said in GREAT shape. I know people find them at estate sales for much cheaper, but for me it would have been worth the money because at this point in my life I don't get a chance to go to estate sales, and where I am there aren't many anyway. Not to mention that Grandma's garden quilts are my favorite. Oh well, I'll just have to keep my eye open for another one I like. |

Do you have any vintage floral feedsacks for sale?
|
Turn off the internet! it aint gonna happen. I too have an addiction to 1930 feed sacks. I only wish I had some of the ones my oldest sister use to make my nieces dresses out of. I turned to buying the repo's because I knew I could never cut into the feed sacks that I have. They are safely tucked away in a cedar chest. I have a hard time cutting into the repo's. So... you are not alone.

I’ve got several 70’s bed sheets. Someday I may get more to pair with white or pastel for a quilt top.
|
So cool! I really like American Jane fabric. I'm planning bgg on making a king size pin wheel with it. I have never thought of buying the actual feed sacks. Someone must have bought them all up around here. I never see them in flea markets.
