ladies, I am not sure how to proceed. I had a plan but am having to change it because of the difficulty. I have decided to just do stripes (maybe) between the corners but not sure how to do them. where to place the fabric and stuff. I had thought of doing white triangles next to the white parts so it looks like they are on point but gave up that idea because I have no pattern to follow for them. so going with stripes. tell me what you think so far.
this is the fabric that I am thinking about doing for the stripes. this is the whole thing with out the side panels except for the triangle peices that will be there. this will be the boarder and backing fabric. |
I don't have a suggestion but what you did so far is gorgeous.

thanks.

No clue! But VERY beautiful!
|
That is gorgeous. What do you think about a small stripe of white down the center of the dark piece? Just to break up the two blues somewhat? Anyway just an idea.
|
I love where you are going with this :D:D:D
|
didn't even think about doing a white stripe, will be doing a white stripe now. thanks

First...I have the same pair of shoes.
When you say on point, do you mean turning the entire quilt? This is a mariner compass design right? I am new to quilting so just learning. I love the choice of fabrics. The blue and and white are perfect. Blue water and sky...white clouds. When I look at the design being a compass...I see the 4 corner pieces as North, South, East, West. Would it work to turn the whole quilt so the corners are in the middle of the top and middle of sides. Instead of using them as corner pieces. If this is making any sense. Anyway....I love this everything matches up perfectly. Is this paper piecing? Great Job...  |
I didn't do it as pp but it could have been done that way. the corners are supposed to be the corners. the block is actually already on point. I was just going to make acutal points. but think that it is going to be really hard to get them right.

It is going to be absolutely beautiful whatever you decide.
|
I don't know if this is helpful or not. I just looked up on point because I was not sure what it meant.
Here is a page for Math for On-Point Quilts. http://www.quiltville.com/onpointmath.shtml |
I really like your layout so far. After seeing your border & backing fabric I immediately thought that a narrow white piping would be great before the binding or in between the sashing.
|
thanks for the chart

I like your blocks, great job, I can't wait to see the finished top
|
Beautiful....
|
What you have done so far is awesome, your work is stunning. I would like to see a picture when it is finished.
|
I'm confused as to what's going in the middle blocks.
By the way, it is stunning!!!!!!!!!! :D |
that is what I am stumped on. I had a plan but not going to do it. then thought about continuing the white from the middle into the side panels. but am worried about how that will look. then thought about just doing a couple of stripes. the solid blue fabric around a center stripe of the swirly blue fabric. than someone suggested adding a stripe of white between the blue stripes to help them pop. which I am thinking about doing. hope that this makes since. any suggestions will be helpful thanks everyone.

Hi from Florida.
I am not sure if this would work. I see that you have Octagon shapes in the centers of your blocks. Those have 8 flat sides. Maybe you could use a similar shape to connect the blocks using one of the flat sides. Without actually having the pieces I can't say that it would work. The quilt is beautiful. |
I'm sorry I don't have a real suggestion, just an agreement with the PP who suggested a white between the blues to make them pop.
But WOW! I love what you've done so far. I love the colors, and I love the design. |
The blue and white is just striking! I'd do a strip of white flying geese between the two blues, maybe going in two directions <<<<<>>>>> with a square in the middle, where the geese change directions.
|
How about french braid in the side pieces? It is pointy but different enough to support the broader side panels.
|
Your mariners compass is gorgeous and I love how you are putting it together. The two blues are perfect! I like the idea of a very narrow white between the two blues, but also like the look of the darks framing the center without additional white. I think you will have to audition it to see which you like best. Either way will be beautiful!
If you want to continue your center to look like a square on point, that can be easily done by putting your center on a piece of newsprint (or newspaper for that matter) and just draw a line with your ruler continuing the line of your white fabric out from either side where you've added the corner triangles till the two lines meet in a point. Hope this makes sense! I know what I mean! |

It's very beautiful what you have done thus far. I love the tone of the colors of blue
|
I think I would go with the white in that area. The white will let those stars pop out like they are now and they'll also give you good size areas for some special quilting. I would add the border fabric next and do the tiny white piping like someone else suggested.

Gorgeous quilt!!
