We do have a HobbyLobby, they have a nice fabric dept. All the fabric stores are across town from me, adds another 20 minutes to and from on my drive so I really must want or need something to go there. Nice store!

marsye 07-18-2009 04:26 AM

I'm in Arkansas and most of the fabric depts. have closed around here even after 1000's of pleas for them to stay open. :(
Someone out there needs to open a fabric chain with afordable everyday fabrics like Walmart had!!

AMEN! I agree 100%..... I can't EVEN afford to walk in our Q store.

BellaBoo 07-18-2009 07:22 AM

I have emailed Alco stores many times asking them to please consider a store in my area. They have name brand fabric of past years line which is fine by me for less then $4 yard. The nearest Alco store is about 1 1/2 hours from me and I go when they have a fabric sale of 2 yards for $5. If you have an Alco store, it's better than Walmart!

I would guess that the majority of us buy at least one or two things besides fabric while we are there

Lately, more and more often, even tho it costs a little more, I just pick up at the grocery store what I would normally pick up at Wal-Mart, just because I'm appauled at the horrible service - generally speaking. There are some really good people there, and there are some not so good ones at the grocery store, but you know what I mean.

Oklahoma Suzie 07-18-2009 03:52 PM

There are 5 walmarts in my area. Two have lost their fabric, but the others are keeping it, even after the renovations. I am lucky.

texasannie 07-20-2009 10:11 AM

We have three super Walmarts in Amarillo.....two have closed out fabrics and there is rumor another one will be. None of them carry embroidery thread however! It is totally amazing how hard it is to find plain embroidery thread. Amarillo has three places now, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and Jo Ann's

Sam Walton's dreams about his Walmart have really gone down a different road since he died. The employees will run you over if you get in their way, if you ask for help they give you a look like you asked them to murder their child, and hateful...........they have to go to a special school to learn that degree they show their customers!!! If the prices were not so good, or there was somewhere else in the clickish, one horse, trashy, dirty boozer oil town outside Amarillo that I'm living in until the kids graduate, I would never cross their doorsteps!

Well, it goes to show you that just hoping doesn't do the deed. Gives me a lesson on stepping out and doing something to stop "stuff" from happening as with what happened when the other store stayed open, presumably because of the "protests" against closing the fabric section.

Nancy in Louisiana 07-23-2009 09:15 AM

I wrote a nasty email to corporate headquarters for Walmart and they wrote that uncut fabric was being discontinued and space devoted to "family and life celebrations" departments (meaning party stuff, scrapbooking, kids crafts, etc.) They weren't getting enough profit margin from the department considering they had to devote a clerk to it. OUt of four Walmarts, we are down to one with fabric for just a year more. Their supply is getting really small. I did notice that Hancocks is increasing their fabric supply, but their prices have jumped to $7.99 a yard and up, and that included the same fabrics from Walmart that sold for $2.44! We do have a Hobby Lobby, but what they have is limited. Guess it's time to work solely from my stash for awhile.

Bevanger 07-23-2009 09:57 AM

I love our fabric area ONLY when I know one or the other of my fav. gals is working. Anymore I go in the back door (Auto Shop) which is in the back near Fabrics. They have what? 12-14 if not more checkout stands, Yet I always had to wait in long lines cuz only one was open. I quit going. I have complained, emailed, called. ON DEAF EARS... So I go in the back to fabrics and leave the same way

SheilaE 07-23-2009 01:05 PM

Our local Wal-Mart (well-50 miles away) has a huge fabric/notions department. And it seems to be getting bigger each time. If you look thru the sale items - there are some nice bolts of fabric for $1-$3/yd.

mommom 07-23-2009 02:32 PM

All Wal-Mart stores will eventually NOT carry fabrics. It is a high loss area...seems some shoppers take the stickers off pieces of fabric, at checkout, the clerk thinks it is all on one sticker and don't double check so, it isn't all paid for. Sad, but very true! I registered many complaints when our local store stopped carrying fabric...it did no good...and like many of you, we are 25 miles or so from another fabric store. Besides, who can afford to pay $7 - $12 a yard for fabric all the time!

estherblair 07-23-2009 02:55 PM

so glad your keeping your fabric dept. we have 1 left and to be closed anytime have to go too hobby lobby or hancocks , both are 20-25 miles away.i'll talk to them about the dept. mayb it will help . happy for you
esther

grannydi17 07-23-2009 03:23 PM

:( :( :( :(    HI, my name is grannydi17. Our Wal mart in Salisbury, NC has already closed!!!!! Anger does not state how bad I and everyone else in our area feels. Wal Mart should be ashamed of themselves. This hugh store says it is there to help ALL people with their needs. Well I guess quilters, teachers and anyone else that uses fabric don't count. We must make them listen...... Diane

Charleen DiSante 07-24-2009 04:50 AM

I hope you don't mind my asking, but is this statement based on real facts or a "someone said" statement? Perhaps you have all the facts but, the reason I'm asking is that it doesn't seem right that we should be passing along mis-information to someone here on the message board. There are, for instance rumors of Joann Fabric and Craft stores closing and that is based on rumor and not fact because they are not closing all their stores. Could we help each other out and be sure before we start passing info along? Thanks!

not based on 'he said, she said' but from someone in the chain of command...so I 'assumed' they knew what they were talking about.

NY Nancy 07-24-2009 05:09 AM

Just found out this week that the fabric department in our local Wal-Mart (Hamburg, NY - outside of Buffalo) is closing. Now. We knew it would happen when the store moved, but figured that would be in late August - October.

But get this: the nice ladies who run the department surmised that something was amiss, when they started printing the bar-coded tickets on Monday night. The total was coming up wrong, as though some items had not made it onto the list. They then realized it was because the computer had been reprogrammed to apply the 25% clearance discount... and Tuesday it happened to more fabrics, and finally on Wednesday they received official communication to put up signs marking all fabric and ribbon 25% off.

Snappy 07-24-2009 11:16 AM

Almost of the Walmart's in western Canada have also discontinued the fabric and notions departments. What little that they do carry is junk.

candylady 07-25-2009 06:45 PM

i work at walmart as the dept. manager of the fabric and craft dept. in Tifton,Georgia and within the next 2 weeks we will be closing our fabric dept. It is really hard to try and explain to the customers and friends what is going on when i don't understand myself .I do crafts and sew myself. Our community will be hit real hard without the fabric dept.

Shemjo 07-25-2009 07:06 PM

Welcome to the board, Candylady, from Missouri!

...and the fabric section is low profit department.
Speaking about our Wal-Mart, I can see how they would think that. They let the quality of the fabrics really go downhill. They have been buying cheap flimsy fabric, that once upon a time, would have been in the bargain bin, and putting it on the shelves with the better fabrics, which percentage wise, is much much less in quantity.
It's their own fault. They have to put lower prices on these fabrics, and many pass them over.
I'm not a fabric snob, I'm talking really questionable quality on these particular ones. My girls used to work for Wal mart but got fed up with the managements attitude toward the employees and the publc:
We have the most under one roof, for less (bc we don't pay employees their due, or pay overtime, or benefits)...most under one roof, and no matter what we put on shelves, ppl will buy it anyway, so who cares?
Happy for you, that you got the fab. dept. to stay, but will be surprised if it continues.

KittyGram 07-27-2009 07:07 AM

Saturday afternoon I was in the local Wal-mart, the one I really don't mind going into, and I got 10 or more cuts of fabric, with my favorite fabric cutter on "duty". I made a point of telling her thank you for the level of service she has given to me, and I'm sure all her other customers, in the years that I've known her. I made a point of telling her that the other two women in her store that have cut fabric for me recently have given me wonderful service as well. I did this because as horrible as the service is at the OTHER local Wal-Mart, I want her to know that I for one do see that she gives us her attention when we are in there. She did tell me that they will have fabric for quite some time yet, until the store is either remodelled or becomes a super store. Which won't be for quite some time!!! It's a fairly new store, so no plans for them in the near future.

Nancy in Louisiana 07-28-2009 07:04 AM

With morale as bad as it is among Walmart employees, maybe we should all take a lesson from you and acknowledge good service. It maybe the only praise the employee ever gets and I'm sure you made her day. You are a good example to us all.
