WOW I would love to have those blocks
|
I have one that may parents started embroidering when they were dating. They got married in 1948. This was when there were only 48 states. When I was a teenager my mother told me that if I would finish embroidering the blocks I could have the quilt. So I did, and the quilt is now mine. We used solid blue sashing with the same binding on scalloped edges.

I did one of these quilts for my daughter that had the state flowers with the name of the state on years ago. I put 7x7 blocks and the Minnesota one on top in the center.

My Nana made the blocks for my daughter. I put them together and had it machine quilted. It is precious. It turned out to be queen size. I did ad a couple of machine embroidered blocks to fill in some space.

I have the patterns but so far haven't started embroidering them. Wow, what a find.

[quote=Prism99]Try Googling "state bird quilt" and then click on "images".
I didn't know that about the "image" button. Thank you. So neat. Robin in TX |
Wow. What a deal! Lucky you. All that work already done!
|
Thank you for the wonderful pictures. I love them all. Now to decide which method to use.... and I have to check out the Va block.
|
Wow, you will have great fun with those!

I bought the state flower blocks, sashed them in a mid-green (all the blocks had some green in them) and set them on point. Love the quilt and I can't wait to get home and get it quilted! Love the birds!! Wish I could find a deal like that on the birds as well!!! Lucky you

Your quilt will be lovely. What a treasure. Please show us when you finish it.

These look similar to a quilt I remember seeing at my grandmother's house. That quilt was made in the 30's, I believe.

My Grandmother made one of the states with the birds and my cousin has it and I emailed her and she sent me a pic and she said it was done in 1948 she thought. Will try to post the pic.

I embroidered a set of bird blocks in the 70's. Set them together with beige and brown. My mother quilted it for me and I have it saved for my son if he ever wants it. He's48 now, not married, living at home, on the road as a long haul truck driver a week at a time, so doesn'thave time for much else in his life. I did a set of the state flowers and put them together with pink. My mother had her neighbor quilt it and it is here for my daughter whenever she wants it. She just bought a house after being married for almost 25 years, divorced, lived in an apartment, and finally decided it was time to buy a home and put the rent money on something tangible. I loved doing the embroidery, but wasn't a quilter until much later.

I checked my Va block and it is a cardinal..... after 1950. But the Hawaii and Alaska are both in the set, too. So for sure it's post 50's. Some of the quilts I've seen have very elaborate blocks with both the birds and the flowers. They are so pretty.
|
If Alaska and Hawaii are included, it has to be after 1959. The quilt my grandmother had, had 48 states represented.

My DGM did one of those quilts in the early 60's when I was young enough to play with dolls on the quilt. I have it today and it is one of my favorite treasures. As with a lot of older quilts, mine is a conservative full size.
Great find! |
