I confess - I love kids prints

There, I said it. They're so cheery and silly and bright and fun and full of imagination and dreams. As a matter of fact I make cloth dolls too. I'm 59.

Is this wrong?

Actually, I don't care. I've made "proper" quilts in the past but every time I see a kid print that makes my eyes widen I just want to twirl.

So I guess I should just go for it.

And how about you? What's your fav fabric theme?

QuiltnNan 09-02-2017 04:06 AM

i love the whimsy of kids prints, too. i don't think i have any other that is a favorite.

sprice 09-02-2017 04:54 AM

Nothing wrong with your being "young at heart!" I love the "girly" stuff. Just love pink and purple!

Daylesewblessed 09-02-2017 05:15 AM

I enjoy the kids prints also, and that is part of the reason that I do quilts for Project Linus.

bj 09-02-2017 05:42 AM

I like polka dots and swirls in bright colors.

Annaquilts 09-02-2017 05:48 AM

I like it all. Hawaiian prints are on top of my list but I have been making a good amount of reproduction print quilts. I get to have fun with kid prints and make NICU donation quilts for preemies.

SusieQOH 09-02-2017 05:55 AM

The other day someone mentioned making doll clothes and I thought of my dolls- they haven't been played with or had new clothes in decades! All my REAL dolls are boys :) so they weren't very interested in mine haha
Now I want to get them out and make new clothes for them.
Very little fabric I don't like. Not crazy about purple, or anything that has that frosted look but I'm very easy to please fabric-wise!

daisydawg 09-02-2017 05:57 AM

I really love any prints that relate to kids, big or little.

DJ 09-02-2017 06:01 AM

I love the saying "Young at heart; slightly older in other places"! That's you!

I'm drawn to artistic-looking fabrics. Ones that look like water colors or artist drawings. Susan Winget fabrics are some of my favorites.

I do love to make baby and children's quilts.

Annie68 09-02-2017 06:16 AM

Yup, I'm a kid's prints addict too. I make simple quilts with the fabric and donate to Project Linus and other charities looking for kid's quilts. So much fun knowing the kids will like them too.:)

Doggramma 09-02-2017 08:55 AM

I'm 65 years old and one of the first places I head to in the quilt shop is the children's area. I fell in love with limey green a few years ago, and I'm still not over it. And I love polka dots. Life's too short to not use fabrics you love.

MadQuilter 09-02-2017 04:51 PM

Nothing wrong with knowing what you like. I'm a paisley fan and you'd be surprised at how many people turn their noses up at the paisley.

Sleepy Hollow 09-02-2017 06:33 PM

I love kid fabric! I take part in the I-spy swaps so I can gather even more. Most of the fabrics are making their way into quilts that I'll be donating to the NICU, but some I have just loved so much that I intend to make a big one for myself. Someday, if I have grandkids, I'll help them build forts with it :)

I also plan to make fun tote bags (I don't have a nice purse really, just fun ones, made out of book covers or fun fabrics). And pj pants. And coin purses. And aprons. And...!

I especially love little monsters (I have some glow in the dark monsters in flannel that I plan to use for pj pants). I have to force myself to buy anything pink though. I don't like pink, at all, but I recently made a top with a lot of bright pink that I'm sure will make some little one happy.

I don't know if I'll ever get tired of kid or novelty prints, but I certainly hope not (I'm 38).

zozee 09-02-2017 07:21 PM

Kid prints are my favorite, too. Since they make ME smile, I figure they'll make a child smile, which is motivation enough for me to make kid quilts for charity.

Quiltaddict 09-03-2017 12:19 AM

I love kid's prints too, the colors are so bright and happy, and make me feel good. But, I also love polka dots, western prints, bright florals, pretty much anything brightly colored.

I absolutely love lime green and polka dots. Polka dots on anything are such fun!

I know, I don't get it either. I love paisley, I have two paisley shirts. :)

Butterfli19 09-03-2017 02:56 AM

I love all these responses. I need cheery and color and fun and fabric never lets me down!

kristijoy 09-03-2017 07:47 AM

I love kid fabric! I'm quilting one right now that has these most adorable cutie pie cows on it! :) It just makes me smile! I do buy a fair amount of 'fun' prints.

But I think what I buy the most of is geometric blenders. I don't do a lot with florals. Occasionally I buy a floral for a special quilt. I also buy fabrics that work for boys and men like airplane schematics, graph paper, etc..

madamekelly 09-03-2017 09:29 AM

Florals, paisleys, and tonal. All are hard to resist.

wildyard 09-03-2017 09:47 AM

I love florals, have to MAKE myself walk away from them as I have so many already! LOL

I love paisley!! Very hard to find.

ShirlR 09-03-2017 03:03 PM

I love, love polka dots and batiks, bright, bold colors and also more modern prints in greys and blacks. My fav colors are shades of blues, purples and blue-greens. I've also developed a liking for the lime greens that have come out in the past few years. Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company has a skateboards pattern using black and lime green on a white background that is just so cute for boys in those colors!

I'm a paisley gal too. Also like calico. I'm not too crazy for batiks.

lynnie 09-03-2017 06:40 PM

i'm 58 and I feel the same. I had so many at one point, that I made a "Crazy College" pattern. it was just big cuts 8 x 10 , 5 x 7 ect cuts to see the fabric. I'd pit about 50 fabrics into a twin + sized quilt. I would cut and piece them at night, and then in work the next day, i'd quilt them. I did a series of 55 of them nd donated them to the local hospital, kids section. I was a casket embroider, so I had time in the day to sit and quilt. it was very relaxing to do at a tension filled job. I did all 55 in a 3 month period. I still have some fabs left over to make a few more. LOVE those kids bright print.s

Here's the kid fabric quilt I quilted today! :) Complete with my DH's stuffed chicken. ;)

So cute Kristi, love the chicken!

Annie68 09-04-2017 05:14 AM

Adorable quilt, Kristi! They are so much fun to make. Cute chicken too!

applique 09-04-2017 07:29 AM

I don't piece, just applique. My I Spy quilt is tumbling block pieces with focus circles of prints appliqued to the blocks. Someday someone will be able to piece them into a nice quilt. Just not me.

Kristi, I love your quilt and ADORE your stuffed chicken! It really made me smile. We once had a broody hen try to pull off a late hatch and it was so cold she lost all but one little chick. The kids brought "Owly" inside to cage raise until she was feathered out enough to join the flock. Long story short.....ish, this little hen now thinks she belongs in the house.

She never misses an opportunity to surreptitiously dart into the house and quietly wait until no one is looking to go over and eat the dog kibble out of the feeder. When she is done she will go lay with the dogs on their blankets and take a nap.

Seriously, some days I feel like Ma Kettle!

I'm a sucker for boy prints. Loud and lovely at the same time. makes my heart sing to put them together. I wonder if that is because I have 5 grandsons, a husband, 5 brothers? That may be part of it, but boy fabrics are more interesting to me, as well.

purplefiend 09-04-2017 12:40 PM

I like kids prints too, they are fun to use in my quilts. I like how bright the colors are.

Cathyvv-
I also love boy prints! I have an 11 year old DS and I love finding fabric that he likes so I can work with it.

Right now my favorite kid's fabrics are Dr. Who and Harry Potter. :)

quiltingcandy 09-04-2017 10:00 PM

My favorite quilt to make is an I Spy quilt of kids fabric. For years I would buy kids prints because I knew I would use it is an I Spy. (Originally it was with 3 or 4 inch hexies.) So many people we knew were having babies and I would make one for the baby and another one for an older sibling if they had one. After that it is Christmas fabric and Halloween - love those fabrics, and I have no self-control from buying them.

flikkem 09-05-2017 05:18 AM

You are not alone. I get my "fix" by making baby quilts for charity on a regular basis.

Sleepy Hollow 09-05-2017 09:09 AM

I spent this weekend cutting over 400 squares for I spy quilts (5" and 9 1/2", some for me, some for swapping). Kid prints are my weakness. I just love seeing a stack of all the fun fabrics.

Sewnoma 09-05-2017 09:47 AM

I like kid fabrics too. I collect robot fabrics; people will ask me who they are for and I just say, "ME!" I love robots and don't intend to grow out of it anytime soon. (I have robot toys on my desk at work, too!)

I like space theme fabrics too. Some day I'm going to make myself a space-themed quilt and people will probably think that's for a kid too. :)
