I finished a quilt I made for dad yesterday. I took pictures and put them on here, and had decided to take the advice on here and give it to dad early so he has it through his traeatment.
I had carefully prewashed the fabric before I used it so that it wouldn't run, however I forgot to pre wash the backing fabric. It had to be washed as I had used fusible batting and I needed to dissolve the glue. I put it in the washer at 30 deg and it has dyed all the white and cream blocks pink. I have tried a colour run remover and it has made no difference, so I now have to set to and make another one. Remind me never ever to forget to wash my backing fabric ever ever again. |
Before you give up, run it a couple more times with the color remover- it might help. Just be sure not to put it in the dryer if you haven't allready.

My condolences.. that has to be 100% exasperating!
Ditto to Barbara47.. try it a couple more times with the color remover sheets. |
I washed a pair of mens white shorts and turned them pink. i sprayed the heck out of them with spray and wash and just kept washing them. and it came out

Omg, a quilter's nightmare! HUGS!!!

I agree -- try Oxy-Clean a few times, and go ahead and give it to your Dad. Time is more important that color.
I made a quilt like this for my Dad toward the end, and he wished it could have had it sooner. I still cry when I look at that quilt, because now he is gone. Bottom line? Your Dad will love anything you have done for him, no matter what color it is. You could even try the Oxy-Clean.... later. Spending time with your Dad now is more important than making him the perfect quilt. Take it from someone who has been there. |
Try all of the suggestions and then give the quilt to your dad. Pink blocks won't change the love that went into it. You and he can have a good laugh about the story and he will appreciate it even more. Prayers for you and your dad. BTW I looked at your previous post and it's a wonderful quilt!

If you haven't dried it in a dryer, there is still hope. Hopefully someone from the UK will come up with a product available obpver there.
good luck to your dad! |
Same thing recently happened to Rachelcb80 on a red and white quilt she was putting in a show.
Here's her thread: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-144836-1.htm Red bled all over the white (she hadn't prewashed). Ah, you're in the UK - were you also using a front loading washer? She fixed it - read the thread. Just don't put it in the dryer yet. Good luck! |

Yes i am in the UK and I do have a front loading machine (I didn't know you could get any other type!) I will try it in the bath with oxyclean as I have some of that. I will also see if I can get some synthrapol. Does anyone know if it is available over here?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Synthrapol-S.../dp/B004BPBR52 Here in the US, until relatively recently, most washing machines were top loaders. Now all the major US manufacturers are selling front loaders. (Plus, we're suckers for anything "European" style. ;-) ) The front loaders are more efficient and use less water. Which, sadly, in your case, might have contributed to the problem. Plus, it takes so long for the cycle. The top loaders use so much more water (and are larger) that much of the loose dye would have rinsed away instead of settling back on the quilt. Also, the entire cycle is much quicker, so the the quilt isn't in the machine as long. Hoping it all works out for you. |

I think your Dad would love it any way. You made it with love.
