I could use your great ideas

This wall hanging measures about 35 x 39. The pattern (from Quilter's World, Winter, 2017) just calls for a red binding. I think that may be fine, but wondered if any of you thought I should add a border first. I think I have enough green for a border, and then I'd add the red binding. It's for our church bazaar, so my taste isn't important.

Veinurse 11-06-2017 07:26 PM

It is so simple I would just go with the red and no green. It is very cute!

cathyvv 11-06-2017 07:33 PM

Red binding will set it off perfectly. It's lovely, and such a simple pattern to make. I see one in my future...

DogHouseMom 11-06-2017 07:35 PM

Audition different borders and photograph them.

Idea ... red flange, then a wide green border, then red binding.

QuiltE 11-06-2017 07:38 PM

Great wall hanging!

I agree ... just bind it either in the red or a green.

Putting a border on it, may pull your eye away from the tree to the border,
and not keep you focusing on the beauty and simplicity of the tree.

I am sure it will sell it will be a popular item at your church bazaar.

Red binding, and nothing more. It's got such a great design, simple and modern, that I think all it needs is a red binding.

quiltingshorttimer 11-06-2017 10:44 PM

Red binding--this is such a classy wall hanging that it really doesn't need more. i bought that magazine and have kept it basically for that pattern.

My thoughts exactly.

quilterpurpledog 11-07-2017 03:42 AM

I also like the idea a a simple red binding. To add a border would distract from the simple elegance of the design.

jmoore 11-07-2017 04:22 AM

I agree with all the others...a simple red binding will frame it nicely. Great job by the way.

Homespun 11-07-2017 04:51 AM

it is very pretty...whatever you decide will be lovely, but I agree, keep it simple.

I agree that this does not need anything else but the binding and because of the simplicity it makes a clear statement this way. You were quick to make this one. I say that because of how recent that issue came out. Perfect!

Another vote for just the binding. You don't want to draw attention away from all your beautiful piecing.

SusieQOH 11-07-2017 05:41 AM

Another vote for the binding. It's so pretty!!1

Love the simplicity of the pattern. Very striking, The red binding will give it the finished touch.

Innov8R 11-07-2017 05:57 AM

Red binding without the addition of another color is the perfect finish for your lovely quilt.

I was just getting ready to suggest the exact same thing and then scrolled down and read your reply!

Saw a similar wall hanging a couple years ago at a quilt retreat. They used green for the tree blocks and then red binding. To really make it fancy, then added tiny silver snowflake buttons on the tree. It was gorgeous! Just a thought as to how same pattern can be different. :)

quiltybarb 11-07-2017 12:00 PM

I think the red binding wd be enough.....luv the pattern...

I thought of a flange as well, just a tiny bit of red to add interest.

ragamuffin 11-07-2017 04:46 PM

Love the pattern too. Since it is for a bazaar, I would keep it simple. If it was for myself, I would add little gift boxes on the bottom then bind it to match.

sJens 11-07-2017 04:46 PM

Great job--love that pattern. I think a red binding would really set it off.

Very pretty!

You’re all so helpful! Thanks for the ideas!

I'd add the green border before the binding. It would look more Christmasy.

psquared52 11-08-2017 05:25 AM

I'd lay out your tops choices....1/2" border or whatever of your choices. Take a photo with camera. You'll discover very quickly which you prefer. I work best with concrete examples to help me decide. The wall hanging is very pretty. Wonder how it would look scrappy?

bearisgray 11-08-2017 05:56 AM

I would even consider using a green or brown binding instead of a red binding.

That might extend the "season" for it?

Onebyone 11-08-2017 06:38 AM

I would do a prairie point edge using the same light fabric as the background.

SherB 11-08-2017 08:02 AM

Ohhh. I would love to see this scrappy! This is a great pattern and you’ve done a lovely job. I too would audition options and take pictures. This always helps me decide what to do.

Great ideas! The magazine pattern suggested using different scraps of green prints. I didn’t have a variety of greens that matched color/tone well, and I already had plenty of solid green.

I love the look of prairie points, but hadn’t thought of them at all!

RedGarnet222 11-08-2017 09:21 AM

I can see a single simple red bird appliqued inside the branches to set off the red border. Perfection!

Mimiqwerty 11-08-2017 11:02 AM

Red binding, absolutely!

barny 11-08-2017 11:42 AM

You have perfect design in the quilt. A lot of work on the sides would take from the design. I would just do the binding. I think it is gorgeous. I see several patterns in it.

Great idea!!

..... or how about ghost-quilting the bird in place using a contrasting thread.
Likewise quilt-in presents in under the tree.
This way, you don't take from the simplistic beauty of the tree, yet have some added detail for the up-close-and-personal viewer!

Charleen DiSante 11-12-2017 05:22 PM

Well, thanks to this post I went out and bought the Quilter's World issue. Loving all the fun idras in this one.

1screech 11-14-2017 05:46 PM

I would border in the red and bind in the green. Would give the quilt more pop.

givio 11-14-2017 06:34 PM

I suggest just binding, no added border or multiple colors. The more you add to it, the more it will take away from the tree. And the tree stands alone very well. Your picture already looks very nice as it is!
