What a sweet story. We all need a blankie now and then.

Shrink42020 07-14-2011 05:27 AM

That is who I want to make quilts for!! Lovely!

How precious. This is why we do what we do. Your awesome.

Yooper32 07-14-2011 05:42 AM

I was holding my breathe and envisioning the whole scene. You are not only an exceptional quilter, you are a wonderful story-teller. Great ending too.

glowworm 07-14-2011 05:51 AM

you are a smart and generous lady.

bobquilt3 07-14-2011 05:54 AM

Now you know why I make quilts for abused children. They don't have easy lives and a bright little quilt that is all theirs has to help. I give them to shelters and never hear that "thank you" or even know who they are but that doesn't matter. Those quilts are helping some little child.

quiltaroni 07-14-2011 06:11 AM

Oh lucky you left your quilts on the stairs, it seems it was just the right spot .

pollyjvan9 07-14-2011 06:12 AM

A true gift from the heart!

Thanks for sharing.

All of us make "comfort quilts" and we don't often see the recipients or hear what they liked about the quilt (or how it made them "feel"). -----so nice to hear about the "end" result!

Sweet story! Thanks for sharing.

GrammaBabs 07-14-2011 06:37 AM

I work in a similar style...just making things i enjoy making... what i don't give away, i bring to a my table at our bi annual craft fair here in our comm... i don't price anything.. but when someone asks, "how much" it's usually because' they love it.. then i give some rediculously low price and they always go off with a smile on their face.. and my doll sweater and pants sets are "given" a lot of times to the little girls who jus stare at the pretty colors!! Thanks for reminding a lot of us why we do this sort of thing

I agree. That is what quilting is all about.

You are an angel in disguise! No amount of blue ribbons or accolades could replace the smile on that little girs face. Bless you for bringing such joy!

You are a gracious lady!!

reginalovesfabric 07-14-2011 07:23 AM

most of my give a way quilts I don't put my name on the label, I write " Stitched with love all in the name of Jesus" and the date and city/state. The actual giveaway is between Jesus and I, you will be blessed for doing what you're doing. As he states, "whatever you do for the least of my people you do unto me"

Makes your heart happy, doesn't it

tdgiffin 07-14-2011 07:25 AM

How sweet!

How wonderful ..... when my grandsons come with their tattered quilts to be "repaired" it makes my heart sing as I know they are really loved.

Eliebelle 07-14-2011 08:50 AM

You just made my day.

Jingle 07-14-2011 09:00 AM

What a wonderful story. The reason I make quilts and give away most of them. Adults usually get mine but, always appreciate them so much. I don't make art quilts, I make quilts.
So good of you to give the little girl a quilt and dolly.

mimiknoxtaylor 07-14-2011 09:17 AM

That is why most of us love to quilt!

k3n 07-14-2011 09:26 AM

This is a beautiful story and very touching. Many of us make art quilts and they bring pleasure and comfort to ppl too... :-D

I'm a firm believer that blankies of all kinds will find the right home eventually. Last year I had made a group of blankies to sell in a small boutique. One of them was a fleece zebra print on one side and flannel zebras (cute guys with big pink noses) on the other side. I can't tell you how many people came by and looked at that blankie, held it, commented on it, but no one bought it. Eventually I sold all but that one. A few months later someone on the board was looking for a zebra print so she could make a blanket for a little girl also, I believe, in foster care, who loved zebras. I sent her that blankie because I knew it was just sitting there patiently waiting to belong to that little girl.

gaigai 07-14-2011 10:05 AM

Lovely story about your quilt.

Eliebelle 07-14-2011 10:13 AM

I, too, make "blankies", but because I don't have the ability to make art quilts. Most of them are so BEAUTIFUL and I enjoy looking at them. It takes a very special talent to make those, and I sure all quilters understand and appreciate that!!!

diane647 07-14-2011 10:46 AM

I loved the story. It makes me feel happy to know that your hard work made that little girl so happy. This is the reason we do what we do. Blessings on you and the child.

gramquilter2 07-14-2011 11:06 AM

I believe this is why we quilt so someone special has something to love.

I had a stack sitting on the stairs the other day when a friend came over to visit with her 2yr old foster daughter. The little girl came over to the stack and picked out a very bright orange/pink/purple quilt and wrapped up in it. There was no way she was letting it go and there was nothing in the universe that would inspire me to try and make her. It was her blankie, even thought I had not met her when I made it. I told her that it was her blankie now and also gave her a rag doll I had just finished which she promptly wrapped up in the quilt. The look on her face, her bright eyes and soft almost a whispered "thank you" was priceless and is exactly why I make blankies. She spent the rest of our visit sitting quietly in a chair next to me while I showed her mom how to make the dissapearing four patch block. All during her visit she held on to the doll and the quilt on her lap.
I am now making her a doll quilt and some dolly PJ's as she wants to take the doll to bed with her.

OMG that is so sweet. I'm crying here too, but it is definately a happy cry. :XD:

kso 07-14-2011 11:16 AM

She's a lucky girl to have found you.

Those times are the moments of a lifetime. How wonderful for you to experience this and know that loving feeling. These happenings are the ones that let us know that life is worthwhile and giving to others can be the best feeling in the world. Yolanda Wood River

nabobw 07-14-2011 12:29 PM

wonderful

patimint 07-14-2011 12:34 PM

How sweet of you to give her the "blankie" Sometimes foster kids just need something of their own until they can find that "forever familie" I am the grandmother of to fosters who found their "forever family" with my daughter and her family. They add so much to our family, can't imagine what we did without them.

valsma 07-14-2011 12:48 PM

That is a wonderful commentary on how special it was that you gave that blankie and dolly to that precious child. No matter where she goes she will take that with her and remember the loving woman who gave it to her. Bless your heart.

BuzzinBumble 07-14-2011 01:04 PM

It is people like you who create the joys we find in life.

serenitybygrace 07-14-2011 01:09 PM

How precious! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. We are all in love with that sweet little girl now. You are awesome to give her that blankie and dolly. She will remember this forever, and so will you.
