I Finished a UFO from 2005!!

I just finished this quilt. This is a class quilt from 2005. It was a machine quilting class. I had my mom's Viking. In the class, I found out it couldn't quilt. I got frustrated with trying to quilt this, and I stuffed it in a closet, with no rust safety pins and non yellowing marking tape. I had to make 3 blocks, mirroring the already sewn blocks. It was supposed to be quilted and bought back to the shop. I don't like the shop now. It's changed since 2005.
I didn't realize I had the tape and the pins still in it. I pulled it out, and the tape and pins had stained and yellowed. You can see the rust stains. But they also kind of blend. I'd cover them up but I don't know what will look okay. I sat down and quilted it in 45 minutes with my Janome New Home DC 2014 2 nights ago. From Quilting Forum, I found out about Leah Day's website, and I stalked it. I did her method of binding today. I had to stop and start the video at every step. lol. My mom is getting me the ebook of Leah Day's machine quilting for my birthday in March. I am going to make the Building Blocks Quilt. I'm glad this quilt is out of the way. I doubt the shop wants it back. I need to catalog it in a note book. It's my second usable quilt. I'm going to baste Mr. Chillingsworth and quilt it either tomorrow or next weekend. It's out of the way, it's done. I do have a quilting question. Do you start in the center, or start on the edge for machine quilting? |
Ooh, congrats on your finish! That looks cool with its 3D effect.
To answer your question, you quilt starting in the middle and work your way outward. |
Thankyou. Mr. Chillingsworth. is larger, but it shouldn't be a big deal. The Janome quilts like a dream. I'm thinking about getting their quilting machine just for that.

good for you............feels good doesn't it?

Yeah, despite a few flaws.

I prefer to machine quilt edge to edge.
|

Yes, this week I'm finishing Mr. Chillingsworth. Even on my Janomen New Home DC2014 I can do it. Then next weekend, I'm either going to finish my Meditative Victorian, or cut my round Cityscapes. After Decadent Victorian, there are NO UFOs! (I probably just added 3 more weeks of work on this, but I want a queen sized quilt. I actually bought the solid material for a boarder on Friday.

That is so good you finished it. It looks good!

Keep up the good work! It sure feels good to finish a project.
When I quilt on my home machine, I like to stabilize the border before I quilt the center. |
Yay! I bet it feels to good to have your old UFO finished. I love the other quilt you are working on too.
|
I have not had to use this on a quilt, but you can buy a rust remover at your grocery or hadware store that you can use on fabric carefully. It may help remove those rust stains on your quilt. Congrats on your finish.

The UFO challenge has pushed me to finish things, too. It gives me a boost to sew and a new excitement when I finish. Keep going, girl.

Congratulations! Beautiful quilt!

Congrats on getting the quilt quilted. With free motion quilting you always start in the center and work your way out. Fabric does travel. I even start in the center to stitch in the ditch. I'm much happier with the finished product.

Good for you to keep working on things until they are finished! Unless we do that, some of the quilts keep niggling at us---"finish me".
|
Great job. It feels so good to finish a languishing UFO!
|
Try Grandma's Secret Stain Remover, available at your LQS or even Walmart. It works like a champ!! I also had a 20 year UFO pinned and marked with chalk that embedded itself into the white background -- Grandma's took it out and I was really a happy camper.

:thumbup:Looks good to me. You should see some of my UFO'S they date back to 2000. It is getting harder the older I get to start back on them. :D don't see any stains...

Nice finish--you will enjoy Leah Day's class. She has excellent videos for help on each block.
|
I will buy that. Thanks!

I have a pile of tops that need finishing...how did you motivate yourself to finish a UFO? I love to piece the tops, then I get bored and never finish 99% of my projects. I literally have at least 10 quilts (all sizes) that need finishing. Help motivate me!!!
Love the 3-D effect of the black and white. It looks like your can "climb those stairs". |
Congrats on your finished UFO! Sounds like you are on your way to completing more & happy with where you are going. Leah Day is an awesome quilter & teacher. You will learn a lot from her.
