I went to see an old Singer machine (sorry, don't know the model#) that I saw onCraigslist, and ended up buying not only that one, but also a Bernina Bernette Deco 600, with some cards and a bunch of embroidery thread - got them for a song! Now I just have to learn how to use them.....

Here's the old Singer I went to get originally.

Great Score!!! Either one would be a great find. Enjoy!

dellareya 05-02-2011 09:25 AM

Great score. I also love the thread colors.

jdiane318 05-02-2011 09:28 AM

Enjoy your new machine, I really like Isacord embroidery thread to use, too.

dlbrandt 05-02-2011 09:38 AM

Wow, the Singer looks EXACTLY like the one my mom had. My grandfather bought it for her in 1963. He paid approx $300.00 for it. Did it come with a cabiniet? It was a light blonde color. I think I have attachments for it. I'll check for a model number.

Prissnboot 05-02-2011 09:48 AM

I've never used an embroidery machine, but have a need for one and just can't pass up a deal! I bought the Singer for my quilt frame - it has a deeper throat than the machine I sew with, and swapping the one machine back and forth is a real pain. I appreciate any information you kind ladies and gentlemen could provide!

Stitchnripper 05-02-2011 10:32 AM

Great score! I never thought I wanted an embroidery machine but would be fun for labels. Will keep my eyes open for a used bargain.

Oh wow congratulations!! Have fun!

Jammin' Jane 05-02-2011 12:49 PM

Great machines!!!!!!!!!!!! Is that a 301???

Prissnboot 05-02-2011 01:20 PM

Not sure, but I just looked it up and it looks the same. All I cared about was getting another machine dedicated to my quilting rack that wouldn't die easily.

hobbykat1955 05-02-2011 01:44 PM

I just found the 301A two tone with cabinet on Craig's list and bought it...In mint condition working with assessories...That's what your Singer is. Mine is from 1953 you should find the serial no. under the flip plate by the bobbin case. Mine also came with booklet so if you need any info re: care, oil instructions etc...just PM me.
And the feet dogs drop on it for free motion...screw by the bobbin case...
The closer I look that might be the 400 series..google singer sewing machines and you'll see pictures of all makes an models

Prissnboot 05-02-2011 01:50 PM

Thank you so very much for the help! I asked the previous owner before purchasing if the feed dogs lowered. I am thrilled that I have a great tank of a machine! That's her name, is The Tank. I needed a workhorse....she just needs servicing, but I want to learn how to service them myself so I can save myself the money. Why oh why is bobbin tension such a royal pain in the neck?!

cabbagepatchkid 05-02-2011 02:02 PM

I'm pretty sure that is a 404. I have one just like it. The 301 has the bobbin on the side, under the flip up part, and yours has the drop in bobbin.

You can use the serial # to find out what it is on this site:
http://www.singerco.com/support/serial_numbers.html

There are a couple of Yahoo groups that may interest you....Vintage Singers and Singer Slant Sewing.

If you join either of these groups you will find lots of information in their 'file' section. I have also found PDF's of the manuals for my machines.

ETA: Here is the manual for the 404. Congratulations on your 2 babies!!

you will love the Deco. I had one for years -- my mother gave it to me. It finally gave out on me but I really enjoyed the machine.

Lavada 05-03-2011 02:37 AM

great find enjoy

I have the same exact Singer machine. Got it for free for doing some alterations for a lady who owned it. Bought for her by her mother in law who when she got married, said that every newly wed should have a sewing machine. She said she used it twice in all those years so it is basically new. It really sews nice and straight. It is a heavy sucker tho, so I don't use it outside of home. Not sure what year it was born tho, do you know? Jan

My first machine (1962) looks just like your old Singer. Mine is a 404. It still makes a beautiful stitch.

Olivia's Grammy 05-03-2011 11:46 AM

Sounds like more fun for you.

dhanke 05-03-2011 12:19 PM

You'll love your old singer, my Mom has the same model, I learned to sew on it, way back when. Mom mentioned that she might give it to my niece, I told her over my dead body!

heberstitcher 05-03-2011 12:43 PM

WooHOO!! Have fun

Marysewfun 05-03-2011 12:50 PM

At least your purchase and additional "find" are related !!

We once went shopping for a patio table and came home with a bunch of living room and dining room furniture -

The Embroidery is easy and fun, you will quickly fall in love!

Nice machines!

nanquilt 05-03-2011 01:32 PM

As; I have said to this board before, Bernina Machines are the best. I have four and will sale my Bernina 180 Sewing and Embroidery Machine with complete reference manual and all the extra books I have. This was my first embroidery machine and while I did not use it very much since I was working long hours, it never failed me. It is in excelllent working order. If you are interested, just let me know.

sassey 05-03-2011 02:33 PM
