I hate it, too. Do you have a basting gun? That makes it easier, I hate doing it with needle and thread...just won't do it.

sewwhat85 01-31-2011 07:45 AM

how funny

irishrose 01-31-2011 07:53 AM

What is a basting gun? That's a new one to me, but then as a beginning quilter, everything is new to me.

thequiltmama 01-31-2011 07:55 AM

I agree basting does suck bad. Best of luck :-)

Ladyjanedoe 01-31-2011 07:58 AM

I hate it too !! I tried this method last weekend and I found I actually enjoyed it.( I used pins)

For machine quilting I use pins. The only hand quiting project I've done so far I thread basted. Just recently got a basting gun, so will try that out.

MTS 01-31-2011 08:14 AM

Here's a new notion to help with the basting:
http://www.pinmoor.com/
These thingies eliminate the need for safety pins and, I imagine, would be quicker to put in and take out.

Also, there is the innovative method by Sharon Schamber:

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_EjBGz5vGQ

QultingaddictUK 01-31-2011 08:16 AM

I only ever use 505 basting spray, it definitely takes the hard work out of it. You can baste a whole side of a quilt in 15 minutes

pollyjvan9 01-31-2011 08:30 AM

I don't do any hand quilting, only machine quilting so I always use spray baste. I love it. Quick and easy and able to start quilting in less than an hour. Also on small projects like wall hangings I use straight pins. So much easier.

(time lapse)

Oh my goodness, I just watched the Pinmoor video. I started to say that I have used pincel erasers on the end of straight pins but thought it sounded too dumb. Who knew!

biscuitqueen 01-31-2011 02:24 PM

you can usually find basting spray at wallmart if they havent taking out fabric yet in your area, it's also cheaper.

Jill 01-31-2011 03:42 PM

I pinned a quilt this weekend, but I want to thank MTS for posting the pinmoor site. That looks like something I'll try. Has anyone used them?

QultingaddictUK 01-31-2011 03:43 PM

I don't know about Walmart and it's brands but I would suggest you stick to a known brand like 505 which is tried and true and perfectly safe to use, even in baby quilts.

MerryQuilter 02-01-2011 03:34 AM

For some reason I like thread basting smoothing out and listen to music and just securing for hand work love the whole process!

tealady 02-01-2011 05:41 AM

WalMart carries June Tailor spray. I've used pins on most projects. BUT - I just bought a basting gun and am looking forward to trying it out on my current quilt project.

alleyoop1 02-01-2011 06:32 AM

Be careful with a basting gun. I've broken a needle when it hit one of those plastic things that hold your quilt sandwich together. And they are a real pain to remove!

nativetexan 02-01-2011 06:36 AM

oh my, so sorry you can't find spray basting. I can't get on the floor anymore so i did thread basting on a folding table. I used clips to hold the quilt onto the table and basted the center, then moved the quilt and re clipped and finished. there are battings out there that are fusible too. you iron the top to the batting and then the backing.

dunster 02-01-2011 07:46 AM

Many longarmers will baste a quilt for you. Prices vary, but if you really hate basting you could check it out.

bsktkeeper 02-01-2011 07:49 AM

Spray adhesive, at Walmart in the craft section. Elmers Craft Bond . $5.95 does a good job. and reasonable.

It is a plastic gun which functions a bit like a stapler and shoots plastic thingies (like the ones that hold price tags on) through the quilt sandwich. The disadvantage is that you have to cut them off and they leave a small hole.

BellaBoo 02-01-2011 08:59 AM

I use Pinmoors and they work great. I used them to baste a king size quilt, bundled it up and hauled it to two sew days and not one pin fell out. I found they work best with good sharp thin glass head pins and make sure the pin is halfway in.

Inge 02-01-2011 09:00 AM

What is a basting gun?

I gave away my basting gun. Hated it!!! Most useless contraption IMHO and kept jamming.

penski 02-01-2011 01:48 PM

i only use basting spray , i love 505 but if i need some now i use what i can find , but order 505 from joann.com and use the coupon, i believe once you try spray basting you will love it!!

Delilah 02-01-2011 04:16 PM

I know a lot of the spray basters like 505 but I use June Tailor that I can get at Joann's with a coupon. They sell it at Wal-Mart, also (no coupon). I have no complaints with the June Tailor brand.

sharoney 02-01-2011 05:04 PM

Love Love Love basting spray! Most of the quilts I make are big and have to be laid out on the floor, so I have to crawl around on the floor to baste them. Spray makes it go so much faster. I still hate putting quilts together-it's the only part I hate- but spray makes it tolerable. I use Sullivan's. (in a pink can)

jitkaau 02-01-2011 05:34 PM

Try the craft stores or hardware for spray adhesive that they state is suitable for cloth - that's where I get mine, and it is $5 - not $30 as it is in the Quilt stores.

Flapper 02-01-2011 05:37 PM

There is a tut by SharonSchamber on basting, it's very informative and helpful.

I'm with you on these basting guns. Have had two (one was a gift.) Hated both. Have no idea where they are now.

CorgiNole 02-01-2011 07:36 PM

I really like the Pinmoors. I used them to baste my first quilt. The only problem I ran across was in removing them, I removed a few pin heads along the way (cheap yellow quilting pins) so had to adjust my method of removing them.

Cheers, K

sandpat 02-01-2011 07:40 PM

I agree...I hate it too! I've tried just about every method. It would help immensly if I had a great place to spread out and actually do it, but....I'm thinking that for my next one I will ask a LA'er what they would charge me to do that part for me.

cizzors 02-01-2011 07:46 PM

June Tailors from WM does the job. It's still holding my wall hanging together (and it's still sticky) that I sprayed 3-4 months ago. I'd rather spend $8.00 a can then $15.00 for one that does the same job.

yellowsnow55 02-01-2011 10:14 PM

I hate basting too, I put it on my dining table now and get the desk chair out and wheel from left to right, It usually stays there for as long as it takes, but at least I don't have to stand bend over and hurt my back etc. Works for me.

atvrider 02-02-2011 03:52 AM

Basting scares me.

this is SO GOOD ,wouldn't do it any other way, 3 cheers for sharon schamber.

Dawnmarieodya 02-02-2011 11:42 AM

I bought the pinmoor and have used them on a couple of quilts. I love them. You will never need to replace them once you buy them because they self seal.
They make all colors and they make green for fisher men for men who make there own fly fising hooks.

Annz 02-05-2011 10:47 AM

Good for you. I would be 5 minutes basting and 15 minutes board. :P

Inge 02-05-2011 03:03 PM

What is a pin moor
