I have a new (to me) Sewing Machine!

I am so thrilled! I have been without a sewing machine for almost two months, since my old one just packed up and died. It's been killing me, although I think I've read or re-read every quilting book and magazine I own in that period, washed any fabrics that needed washing, sorted though my stash - twice. We were waiting for the after-Christmas sales, hoping to get the most machine for the least amount of money. Then my Darling Hubby Unit spotted this one on Craig's list. It's a 3-year-old Janome Memory Craft 9700 complete with it's own showroom quality cabinet for $800. Then get down there and the machine looks like it's in showroom condition as well. Well, no wonder! The woman who thought she wanted it, "played" with it for a few hours the first day she got it, and hasn't touched it since! So it hasn't been used in 3 years! It's gorgeous! All the parts are there. A special "completion set" with extra feet and embroidery stuff came with it. There's extra thread, bobbins, stabilizers, all kinds of stuff. We didn't even bother to 'haggle' on the price. We were just so thrilled we grabbed it and ran!

I'd love to hear from anyone who has the same machine. How do you like it? I hadn't intended to get an embroidery machine too, but this was just too good to turn down. If you have one, do you quilt on it, or make quilt blocks?

Oh, yes! After sitting for 3 years, even though it was brand new, right out of the box, does anyone recommend any kind of service on the machine? Surely it doesn't need to be cleaned. Perhaps oiled or something? I really don't know and don't want to do anything wrong with this beautiful baby!

Happy Holidays and many thanks to all of you!

Congratulations on the score!!

Raggiemom 12-22-2011 01:06 PM

I would think cleaning it wouldn't hurt. Since it's just been sitting around, dust could have gotten in the nooks and crannies. Congratulations on your new purchase and enjoy!

Buzzy Bee 12-22-2011 01:11 PM

SEWWWWWW happy for you...!!!!!!

athomenow 12-22-2011 01:43 PM

Wow you did really good. There's never anything on our Craigslist! And if there is, it's overpriced.

fluffygirl 12-22-2011 01:50 PM

What a lucky find. So happy for you. I bet you can't wait to get a project going!

Congratulations on a great bargain. If it has been in a box, I doubt if it is even dusty. I check Kijiji (Canadian version of Craig's List) fairly regularly as you never know. I was able to pick up a Husqvarna #1+ embroidery machine with many extra cards and all the extras (most still in the original sealed boxes) for $200. My friend said she had paid $3600 for the same machine twelve years ago without all of the extras. I'm having fun playing and I'm sure you will too.

frugalfabrics 12-22-2011 04:24 PM

congrats on the machine - sounds like a great one.

I am so jealous!!! Have fun with your baby!

kacy 49 12-22-2011 04:49 PM

That is a steal, not just a good deal;-)) I have a MC 9500 and love it. But I paid 3 x that for mine 4 years ago.

I think you are ready to go. How wonderful for you! Janomes are great machines. I've had mine for 7 years now, and have never had to take it for service. I've used maybe one drop of oil some time after 4 years in the bobbin well. Just brush out the lint between quilts and you're good to go. Congratulations on your fabulous find.

valleyquiltermo 12-23-2011 08:16 AM

The very first thing I do is read the manual. "unlike some people, who live by the theory, if all else fails read the instructions" Thats another story, LOL. Anyway you can't go wrong if you study your manual.
Merry Christmas to you for sure. Can't wait to see your projects on your new machine.

khurtdvm 12-23-2011 11:36 AM

Congrats, and Merry Christmas. Enjoy!!

lovelyl 12-24-2011 03:41 AM

Congrats! I am so glad your wait for a machine is over - what a great deal! I have a sewing/embroidery machine (different brand) and, yes, I use it for piecing and quilting in addition to embroidery. Be sure to post pics of you new baby and your first project with her!!!! Merry Christmas!

michelehuston 12-24-2011 03:48 AM

Awesome find!!! Merry Christmas!!!!

Sharonleigh 12-24-2011 04:01 AM

Oh congratulations! I have a friend who has one and swears by it. I know how you feel without a machine. I had to borrow one to get some of my gifts finished this year. Mine left me about 3 months ago. I have had to quit work and file for disability but I am hoping if and when I get it I can at least get something then. But we sure do miss our machines when we are without. Please let me know how you like it...Sadly I have returned my loaner but I will get one another time until then like you I will just prepare for it....Merry Christmas everyone and I wish you all the best in the coming New Year!

T-Anne 12-24-2011 04:37 AM

I paid around $2200 for my 9700 about 7 years ago. No regrets! love love love my Janome! (I have a Decor 3050 for "classes" and just purchased a Janome 1100D serger too.)

quiltbuddy 12-24-2011 05:14 AM

Congratulations! What a deal! If you haven't already seen the clips on Youtube about this machine there are two 13 min videos. Have fun!

cheaha39 12-24-2011 05:24 AM

Great buy! Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!

imdelagarza62 12-24-2011 05:25 AM

Good things come to those who wait. Congratulations and Merry Christmas!

Alice Woodhull 12-24-2011 06:10 AM

Please, no oil on the machine. They don't need oiling. I take mine in for service once a year, and he does any oiling. He showed me one that a lady had taken in where she had oiled it, and she must have poured it on, as there must have been several tablespoons of oil in the bottom. Just take the bobbin case out and brush, not blow, the lint out. You will have a treasure for several years to come.

weezie 12-24-2011 06:26 AM

How perfectly wonderful for you! What a deal. I would recommend that you take it to a trusted dealer to be serviced. They clean & lubricate. You, as owner, are not supposed to oil/lubricate and you can only clean superficially.

KyKaren1949 12-24-2011 06:53 AM

Congratulations! I know you are thrilled to be able to sew once again!!! Merry Christmas!

C. 12-24-2011 07:24 AM

Congrats!!!!! You will love this machine and WOW what a price, totally unheard of.... These machines need NO oiling as the bearings are sealed. The only thing that is needed every once in a while is just ONE drop of oil in the bobbin hook race area. You will see this little pot in the center when you take the whole bobbin assembly out, it has a little wick, do not remove, just place your drop of oil there and it keeps that area moving smoothly. As for cleaning, totally a matter of choice, my two different dealers told me as long as I clean the bobbin from lint (like every other time I put in a new bobbin, that every 3 years would be good for taking it in. I have 4 Janomes: the 6600 (my baby), the 9700, the 3160 for classes and my old class one a Jem Silver. I have NEVER had a problem with any machine in over the 20 years that I have bought different Janomes, others I have sold to update. My one thing that I would suggest is to read your manual and get familiar with your machine.... You too, will love it........

Peggie 12-24-2011 07:36 AM

Hello Nevada! WOW...I think you are going to love your Janome MC9700....I purchased one in 2006 for $2100, and was told this was a pretty good price....I had never embroidered, but my sewing group, also in Nevada by the way, was just getting interested in it and most of them bought embroidery only Janomes and they absolutely love them as well! I have sewed/quilted/embroidered the heck out of this machine....it owes me nothing, and it keeps on chuggin'.....right now I am in New Hampshire....originally from Massachusetts, and lived in Henderson NV for eight years....we still have the home there and will return in January....I couldn't resist writing since you not only have a machine like me, but are in Nevada as well....good luck with your machine and maybe someday we can meet.....I have, however, decided to leave my baby in New Hampshire this winter.....she traveled back and forth with me for a couple of years, and I'm worried that it may harm her even though I have the original packing....anyway, nice to hear your great news!

I'm finding that to also be true sewing machine wise anyways. Other items can be a steal if that's what you're looking for, but not the sewing machines.

Congratulations for your score! Enjoy your machine.

What a wonderful gift and you so deserve it having had to wait for it. Merry Christmas and a happy new year of quilting on your new machine.

ontheriver 12-26-2011 05:40 AM

Congratulations, have fun!!

coldquilter 12-26-2011 05:57 AM

That is so exciting. We never have anything on Craig's list either. You are very lucky.

Michellesews 12-26-2011 06:00 AM

Some Janomes require oiling of the wick....and if that is the case with this machine, that wick is pretty dry by now. Check the owner's manual under maintenance. But then, I am an oiler...my Brother requires one drop of oil in the bobbin before each use, my Horizon gets a drop once a week and the A-1 longarm drinks it like crazy...so I am so oil conscious. I am suspicious of machines that "never need oiling"...this is beyond my comprehension, especially since I live in the desert where it is so dry. You will love embroidering on your machine. This will open up a whole new world for you...and there are so many free embroidery designs on the internet. You will need software if it did not come with the machine. I use my embroidery machine mostly to make quilt labels...but I also embrioder quilt blocks, sweat shirts, towels, the list is endless. Congratuations on a great find...can't go wrong with Janome/New Home in my opinion, and I have had them ALL. :)

connie d 12-27-2011 08:30 PM

Congratulations on your lucky find!!! I have a Janome horizon 7700. Janome's are good machines. I would find a dealer that can service your new baby, because after 3 years it could need the dust cleaned off. These machines are not like the old ones, you can't get to the areas that need to be oiled. Have fun! :)
