These days if I'm laying something out or if I've designed a pattern on the computer, I take a picture of my layout (or print out the pattern), pop it in a plastic sleeve, and tuck that in the box/bag with my fabric pieces. In the past I used the pin-in-the-seam-allowance method and never had a problem with rusting, but I hate reaching into a bag and getting poked. I'm a wimp LOL . |

Thank you for all the kind and helpful suggestions. And I'm very sorry about the font and spacing issues. I was trying to find my way around the board when I posted my dilemma and didn't realize what effect some of my choices would have on the final posting.
When I originally put my blocks away, I was very new to quilting and had no idea that the masking tape would leave this residue. Since that time, I have found other methods of marking my blocks. Believe me -- I will never use the masking tape again! |
@QuiltE - Painter's tape is just blue masking tape. I wouldn't use it, it will create the same problems. I use post-it notes or small pieces of paper and a pin to label my blocks.

And aren't you creating the same potential problem with your post-it notes? Painter's tape is the same yes ... though from what I have always understood, the adhesive is adhesiveand considerably safer to use on fabric, than masking tape. |

Thanks, Jan in VA If you use "Reply With Quote," you can change the font to become readable by highlighting and then changing the font type and size. You don't actually have to "submit reply" in order to see it in a readable form. Here is what she wrote in Comic Sans-2: "4 years ago. Worked on and completed 12 blocks - 10 X 16 - quite labor intensive. I laid out the blocks in the sequence I needed for the quilt and put a small piece of masking tape with numbers in corner of each block to keep them in order. Got distracted, put the project away in the UFO box. Yesterday I got it out to finally finish up. When I took off the masking tape, it left a residue on the blocks. HELP! Does anyone have any suggestions for removing this residue? Shrinkage won't be a problem because I pre-shrink ALL the fabric I use. All suggestions for removing the residue will be appreciated" |
Goo gone or Goof Off will both work and will not hurt the fabrics. I work in the paint dept at Lowes and when we get paint on anything including our clothing we use Goof Off or Krud Kutter to take it off. Just wash as normal when done. I would take a paper towel or old rag..soak it with Goof Off and press it to the spot for a minute or so to soften the glue. If you are not sure of color fastness test a small piece of fabric before applying. Then gently rub the spot. It might take several applications to get it all off. We also use Goof Off to remove price labels from things and it will take off the sticky from most things. I did find one thing that Goof Off will not remove the sticky from......Carpeting. I used the double stick carpet tape for a throw rug on my carpet. It left lines of sticky on the carpet. I used a good half large can of Goof Off on the rug and the sticky is still there. Rubbing Alcohol is another option but it didn't work on the carpet either. Not as bad but still there.
Any tape even painters tape has a time frame you need to follow in order to remove safely. Painters tape will have a time frame on the label that you should remove it. Usually 7-14 days. A few you can leave for up to 60 days. The best way to mark fabric is with a piece of paper and straight or safety pin. |
Lighter Fluid will take out the goo.
But wash afterwards. |
I agree with Tesspug; try goo gone on one block first before you try all. Just rub Goo Gone in gently and then wash. I use it often, though not with residue like that. Do let us know how it works out.
