I saw a fabulous quilt made from the shirt pockets. Each pocket was sewn onto a square and the squares were sashed into the quilt. Each pocket had a piece of muslin with a good luck wish written on it! It was made as a birthday gift for a woman whose husband had passed away some years before. It was not only beautiful but clever as well. You could use it for any special occasion. Have fun with it.

Absolutely, and it would be adorable with stripes, plaids, I can just see it! I also saw a pattern for an apron in Amy Barickman's "Vintage Notions" that uses a man's shirt. the shirt back becomes the apron front, and the straps are cut from the shirt front. Adorable. Lots of men's shirts have some polyester, so would likely not shrink like cottons.

My mother use men shirt all the time for her quilts because when she did her quilting we had a shirt shop in town where she would get seconds

My husband of 50 1/2 years passed away last year and I plan on making a quilt out of his shirts. That is, when I can stand to start cutting his shirts up, which I haven't reached that point yet, but I will this coming year, I hope.

I'm making some kid's quilts for donation and I'm using the pockets for labels. I can print the info on the pocket, sew the pocket on the back of the quilt, and then stuff a small stuffed toy in the pocket.

I was able to buy a stack of 8" squares of shirting fabric that I will use for boy baby quilts and who know what else for only $6.50

Red Rooster Fabrics has a free pattern called "Squirrel in a Cage" that's perfect for a bunch of shirts.

I have been so busy trying to build a small stash..I found that when I wanted to practice making circles or any other pattern I wanted to try before incorperating it into a huge project...I couldn't bare to cut up and practice on any of the precious fabric I've collected so far... So I started digging through closets for shirts/sheets and anything else I could find around the house to practice on lol...
I'd definitley save a few of those shirts for practice material if you don't like the idea of cutting up any of your stash...

Go ahead. Several of us cut 6" squares out of twenty some long sleeve shirts for a friend whose husband passed away and she asked that we do this for her. We had more than enough to make four very large snuggle quilts for the grandchildren and a large queen size quilt for her (as a surprise). They were med to large size shirts. We even used the pockets...She hid small gifts in them before giving them to the grandchildren. She loves her memories they bring back when looking at them.

I saw a handbag a few days ago made from shirts. They used the front of the shirt, including the pocket and collar for each Main side. The collar and front placket were sewed down. More of the shirt was used for the sides. Wished I'd bookmarked the pattern.

Oh! What a great quilt. I've been waiting to find THE right pattern to use for all my (DEAR!!!) dearly departed mil's 100% cotton blouses. This pattern is perfect. I've shown it to my sis-n-law. It looks like "the one." THANKS for telling us about this.

I get some of my favorite fabrics from cutting up old clothes. In fact, I lost my dad at the beginning of the year and saved lots of his shirts to make me a quilt.

Hi, I volunteer at our local food panrty, we also have a household/clothing bank there. When items are there way too long the gal running it saves them for me to make quilts out of. Some of course the materail is not suitable, but most any type can be used for charity quilts, which is what I make. I make quilts for our kids too, but mostly for charity. I have been sewing since I was 5, am now 76 and still love to sew. Anna

Just a reminder to save all your little bits for making crumbles or to pass on to those who do use crumbs. There will be a lot of fabric not good for squares that will work well for crumbs.

What are crumbles? This is the first time I have heard this term used.

Thanks for all your feed back. Right now I have just finished up the queen-sized quilt top for my Grandson and am working on a king-sized commission quilt. I have my sons' wall hanging ready to quilt and have finished a table runner for my daughters' Christmas gift. I forgot to take a picture of it before I wraped it, tho. It was made with all half-square triangles and bound in satin blanket binding. It turned out real pretty, but I don't want to do anymore half-square triangles for a while...haha. It is a 22" by 64" table runner. Hope she likes it. My Lenni Long-arm sewing machine system with a 12ft table has been delayed being shipped for 2 weeks because of back order. I was hoping to have it here and set up by Christmas. I will have two quilts to quilt and need to get them quilted.

Hi I never heard that word either, crumbs. And I ahve been quilting for 71 years. Started at age 5 helping my Mom tie quilts. Got the bug early. But if it means peices and I think it does. I make lot os charity quilts useing pieces, some quite small. They make lovely crazy quilts.

I think you can make a quilt out of just about any type of fabric!! At least that's what I've learned from being on this board!!!LOL!! Just make sure to post pics!!! Merry Christmas

Crumbs are the little bitty pieces that many of us toss away as being too small to be useful, even in scrappy quilts.
I just like to call the squares made from crumbs crumbles, my own made up term. Smiles and hugssssss
