I am putting this quilt together. It is one of those jelly roll quilts, but scrappy. Each piece used, has flowers that I love, but some are kind of folksy and others are really nice like paintings of the flowers. So anyway this quilt top has a lot of light colors. I am putting on a dark green border and a dark green back. So what color do I use to machine quilt it? I guess the dark green, but does it work to use dark green bobbin and white top thread?
|
Sure why not ? I have used different colored thread top and bottom
|
Or why not go with a medium green for both?
|
I always use thread to match the top and backing, but I think as I get better at FMQ and such that I will not always match the fabric and thread. Something tells me that will be a while yet. lol

I'm finding that I like the variegated threads more and more. I only use them on the top, not the backing.

Wow, lots of good responses even in the middle of the night! Thanks I am going to try the two color thing. Dark green on back and white on top.
Thank you each that answered! |
My personal preference is to use the color of thread to match the backing in the bobbin and a invisible thread on the top.

Tension will need to be adjusted carefully or dark thread will show on top. Even then you will probably still see some of dark on top or white on back. This will show at needle holes and there is nothing you can do about that.

I have used different colors in the bobbin and on the top. Works fine for me.

I noticed a tension issue show up when my threads didn't match front and back, and one was much different than the predominate color of the fabric. Not sure if it was my technique on FMQ or what. I had it into the shop twice without any resolution. (they told me I was using 'cheap' thread) Very frustrating! And, why is it that you can get super results on your practice piece..and without changing a thing, you move to your quilt and it all gets wonky!?! I do like the varigated threads too. Hope you'll post a picture when you are done! (I hope this didn't sound too negative, just wanted to warn you of a problem I recently had...)

There was just a topic on here about using different thread in the top and bottom, and the little bits that showed due to changing tension issues. They said that it may disappear when washed/dryed and that they also considered it another design element if it didn't  :D:D:D

You know I would test it first to see which I liked !!! Sounds gorgeous pic please
